When the Yuan Dynasty took over China they made it illegal to interbreed with the local Han population (they also made it illegal for locals to learn their language or culture). They also hired foreigners, even from as far away as Europe occasionally, to run cities as their appointed agents (think like viceroys - this is also how Marco Polo ended up a local mayor in China).

Some of the Yuan even suggested genociding all the Han to make room for their people in China, but ultimately they abandoned it. The next 2 major dynasties to rule China were extremely reactionary and tried to purge anything seen as Mongol in culture.
