Final Fantasy as a whole is like Zelda, its only appeal is the atmosphere (read: graphics & music). If you ask the fans "is it fun to play?" they can never give you a straight answer.

Do you want to see the quirky and funny moments that were all around the original? you will love it
Do you want a very depressing game, blood, swearing, prostitution, poverty and stuff? you are gonna be disappointed
Do you want the story to be EXACTLY as the original? you are gonna be dissapointed
Some scenes were rewritten while others were expanded. Entirely depends on you

I think you can swap it out in the options? If not then restart on normal, it's worth it.
Also the battle system will feel awful for a while, until things click for you, and then it becomes good. You just gotta wrap your head around it.
