Sirens are creepy to a lot of people because we pretty much only associate them with terrible shit. So you make a monster that immediately puts terrible shit in your head, but there's no real substance.
Now with the unending workshop that is the internet you have an infinite source of people that will go off that impulse to try and make something out of a creepy image, and more infinite source of people who lap up the cheap cliches they spew out.
