I'm pretty sure it's just the disc itself. Some of my games still work as well as the new MediEvil discs i found at a store. It just stops working once I get to the second world. This game was an absolute blast even if the farthest I ever made it was to the Praying Mantis boss

I'm looking for the name of a game I used to play as a kid at a local store - it was based in Asia, I believe it was a shooter and the final boss had you in an asian castle battle a giant skull that attacked you with two floating hands. I know it's vague but does it ring bells for anyone here?
