Civ thread

What are the best Civ games/mods?
I've had a lot of fun with IV and V. How do the first three hold up?
Caveman2Cosmos is very complex and engaging but it takes a long time to get anywhere.

civ iii and iv are the best in the series
there's a ton of excellent mods, c2c planetfall and history rewritten are great

VI is an actual good game, Zig Forums doesn’t want to admit it.

Why domination victory is so hard bros? Im doing something wrong, am I?

sol invictus, many of the FFH variants, BNW
IV is the best by virtue of mod community

I love this game, I really do.
But I’d like to play other games, and this one sucks your soul into it and doesn’t let go until you’ve had your fill of hundreds of hours

How are I and II?

easy, Civ 4 with mods is the best game in the entire series
you got a bit of everything
Play Rise of Mankind if you want vanilla + with more units (a new dawn is still being developed)
Play Realism invictus if you want a slighly different take over the usual vanilla playstyle (stacking units gives them a logistic penalty for example, so quality > quantity), its incredible fast and has imo the best AI and models of all mods, still also being developed and its, as the name says, very realistic and as such, civs entire roster of units is very different from eachother, very refreshing and incredible mod
Play Fall From Heaven 2 if you want a total fantasy conversion, nothing even comes close to it when it comes to a fantasy setting, doomstack get buttfucked by magic and spells and arcane units are fun to use, soundtrack fits the setting incredible well aswell, i recommend playing Ashes of Erebus since its still being developed, there's another modmod called magistermod wich is very lore friendly but incredible unbalanced unfortunatly
you also got mods like Planetfall and Final frontier plus for a future only setting
i have played several versions of Caveman2cosmos throught the years and never managed to get to the last age, still enjoyed the time i had with it all the way thought, it still being actively developed and its goals are very ambitious

make military units

civ v has a mod that adds civ iv like diplomatic features, i love turning enemy civs into my vassals.

The community balance patch in general is amazing

Vox Populi its unironically the only mod you need for Civ 5, well in reality there's very little mods to chose from, but still, this one does a very good job at adding more stuff while fixing several balances issues from the original game, and if you feel like anything is off you can adjust most thing by modifiying the XMLs files yourself, not as customizable as in 4 but at least is something

R.E.D. is interesting

Build statue of Zeus

Chop your woods

what difficulty?

click the declare war button

kill enemy units with your own units

woah...

2 and 3 are good and you should be able to get into them if you liked IV

Older PC games are amazing. I’ve been playing the first two Fallout games recently and they’re great games.

I find it amazing that one of Civ IV's selling points was modding, then they found a way to fuck it all up for Civ V and VI. They didn't even have a proper scenario builder, iirc you have to use worldbuilder and give your save to somebody. Why make it so difficult and unwieldy to make even vanilla scenarios?
Also play Civ IV Colonization mods. There's an extremely based sci-fi mod called Colonization 2071 that is still in development which I think has a lot of potential. Plus of course Civ IV Colonization: TAC for something more like the original game and Age of Discovery for something that expands the game massively.

>Colonization 2071
>the aliens developed a post-scarcity society, making them lazy and lose their society, fracturing into seperated deindustrialized tribes to act as the native americans
>russian oligarchs turn the country into such a corportatist state they end up as the dutch mercantilists
>scientists act as the missionaries that study aliens
>'it's time for the gotham uranium party'
fucking great mod

more technically, I'm amazed they managed to shove a tech tree into a Col mod

>Why make it so difficult and unwieldy to make even vanilla scenarios?
imo at the time Civ V was released most AAA games were dropping support for true modding capabilitys completely in order to sell more DLCs than they otherwise would if they gave modders proper access to the game files like they did with Civ 4 and before, its sad but i don't think we'll ever get back to that era anymore, im just very glad that Civ 4 mods turned out to be so good that they are still as playable today as the day they were released, just like the base game

How is civ 4 touhou mod? I've heard of it years ago, but never played it.

absolutely, i was impressed they pulled that off

civ 1 is most fun

i have played civ since civ 1 and alpha centauri and i never even considered the possibility of mods existing for this game
are they really good?

>tfw a Zoomer just getting into these games
I feel spoiled.

Civilization 2 is the best game in the series followed closely by Civilization 4.
Test of time version of 2 is not a mod but has a fantasy setting.

are you joking?
civ iv was considered one of the best mod supported games

both 3 and 4 have aged really well and 5 looks better than 6 anyways so they still really easy to get into nowadays regardless of how old they really are
