Hi guys, little confused about this new PSO2 expansion. Was wondering if someone could clear it up for me?

I played the shit out of PSOBB, didn't get much into Universe, but was patiently awaiting 2. Then months turned to years and it was never localized. I stopped waiting for it years ago and stopped PC gaming a couple of years back and switched to consoles for convenience. Now PSO2 is out on Xbox I'm tempted to dip in for a series X. (Never tried the japanese version when it came out either)

I've heard mixed things about 2 from other BB players, and it seems to stray a bit from what PSO was about, however this new expansion is looking really nice.

Is this like a WoW expansion? Where it's just going to be a new area, quests and events? Or is this a standalone game that I could pick up without having played PSO2? I see you can transfer your character, so would I have to play PSO2, max out and then transfer over to this expansion?

Any help would be appreciated because everyone's saying something different.

Thanks!

It’s a stand-alone game that compliments the original pso2. You can play both at any time and both will be free.

This is where I'm a little confused.. compliments it how? Story/lore wise or do I have to swap back and forth between them? I think this new one looks a lot better than 2, closer to what I loved about BB.

it's not stand-alone. they're upgrading the engine. it's replacing the game similarly to ffxiv 1.0 to 2.0

You will be able to play PSO2 separately from new genesis.

Its PSO2 2
It a squeal to PSO2 that takes place in the same timeline/world
PSO1 and PSO2 take place in different continuities
Bizarrely though, PSO:Zero takes place in the same world as PSO.

I imagine if you want the full story you will have to play both games.

Whatever the case pso2 isn’t bad. Worth a shot until new genesis comes along.

that is false; it's a soft reboot. the games will co-exist and the only thing you can transfer between both games are your weapons, armor, character customization data, and some cosmetics. level progression and currency are separate

We don't fucking know for sure yet. Shut the fuck up and wait with the rest of us.
Yes you will be able to switch between the two of them.

Ok so.. Is it standalone..? Or not.. can I just download new genesis and play through it like a regular game? Or would I need to play 2 first?

And if I decided to play 2 first, would I miss out on a new campaign or something in new genesis?

Sorry if I'm being stupid, but it's got me really confused.

Also with the lore thing, so the PSO I played is no longer canon? So it's like a new continuity or timeline of events?

Sounds like its basically PSO2-2 and its going to be side by side played with the same character. Sounds like they're doing it this way because of how the crossover contracts are worded. Also base PSO2 is getting the same graphics overhaul.

NG is kind of stand alone thing, but they ARE revamping the graphics of base PSO2.

We don’t know if it’s standalone yet but I assume it will be.

Everyone seems to have an opinion then. Just saw this pop up yesterday night.

it's standalone but still has the option to transfer some progression over for oldfags. if you want you never have to touch the old version but it will still exist if you feel like playing it anyway

it will exist alongside pso2 and you can play both and either. The story will likely continue, but the story is shit so who cares

So the PSO story is so lightly linked between games you can basically consider them all seperate games. The actual sequel to PSO was PS:Zero that was what was happening on the planet (Coral) the PSO colony ships all came from while the Ragol shit was going on in PSO. PSU has a couple of mentions of the planet Coral if you dig deep enough but for the most part totally separate games. PSO2 takes place so far in the future it doesn't really matter anymore. But its hinted at they're the same universe. Also there is canon dimension hopping in PSO2 so who fucking knows anymore man.

PSO2 is dropping Vita support and getting a graphical/performance overhaul. This overhaul makes it compatible with the customization options being offered for your character in New Genesis.

PSO2 New Genesis (PSO2NGS for short) is a brand new game running concurrently with the existing PSO2. You can link your account to both games and use the same characters across both titles. Although they're the same characters, only your base appearance, equipment (not cosmetics), and premium currency carry over between games.

If you want a condensed version of pso2’s story without playing it, there is an anime series.

Not the first one. That’s kinda shit. There’s another one but I forget the name.

Episode Oracle is a good summary of Episode 1-3. The other one is basically whats going on outside the PSO2 universe during Ep4 when they decided its a fucking Isekai now but thankfully they backtracked on that shit hard during ep5.

Ah cheers dude, appreciate the run down. I never got much into the lore, but I remember a few bits and pieces from my time with BB. I'm just trying to get back into the franchise and I think New Genesis is the right place to start then.

Thanks guys. That really helped. Hadn't seen the video, so it is it' own thing but has some cross over for people who played or want to continue playing 2. Appreciate ya.

This sounds interesting, does anyone know the name or what I should start from? I'll give it a watch.

Pso2 episode oracle is the name of the series. Should be available to stream online.

To warn you the EP4 stuff is really really bad and Episode Oracle is solid but the budget is pretty low.

Awesome thanks you two, so should I just watch Oracle and skip EP4 if it's so bad?

Ep4 comes out in game in a couple of weeks and if you like the ingame stuff I'd say watch it but its totally skippable since they really quickly pretend the isekai shit doesn't exist in ep5.

So there's no reason to bother playing PSO2 now right? Just wait for this new shit?

That's what I'm leaning towards.

PSO2 is still going to be it's own game and the new one isn't coming out for like a year yet.
I'd say check out PSO2 and see if you like it, not like it costs anything.

This art was way superior. Bring it back cowards.

It’s entirely upto you. You won’t exactly lose any benefits from not playing but I enjoy it right now with friends.

Some in game stuff still carries over its probably worth playing if you want cosmetic stuff. Also the game is pretty solid if you can get past the dated ui.

Everything about PSO 's(BB) art style, story, etc is better then 2s.
I like 2's gameplay a lot but god damn PSO1 did everything else better.

New Genesis is a standalone game that also coincides with a graphical engine update for PSO2 to match it. NG is a soft rebooted game, PSO2 will still be what it is. You can use the same character between both games, and your weapons, units and mags transfer (albeit likely severely downgrade or for aesthetic purposes, as Mags seem to no longer be necessary stat sticks and photon burst sources), as well as emotes and "other registered data", so presumably outfits and cosmetics cross between them as well.
