I just finished this a few days ago, it's not perfect but it's definitely one of my favorite games in recent memory. It's incredible punishing, but the lore and art is really interesting, enough that despite being a fucking retard whose 20 hour playtime is 75% futile effort prior to death and reverting back to my save I don't regret any of the time I put into it.

Dodonpachi Daioujou and the entire dodonpachi series are depressing in general. Its an STG so no very detailed story but the music especially in stage 1 and stage 5 really give it a depressing tone. Even more so considering getting to 2-5 takes a ridiculous amount of time so meta depression.
