No they weren't. They're still independent. Sony were unhappy with DS's sales, and the deal for Kojima to make a spinoff Silent Hill title fell through. He's friends with Remedy, who are making their next two games for Epic, and he was extremely impressed by Epic's terms. It was a "deal he couldn't refuse". He didn't like handing over his IP to Sony with DS. But Epic will fully fund him, handle all the marketing costs, and let him keep the IP.

I'm not butthurt over 4 or 5. 4 had good gameplay and underrated bosses even though the story is actively horrible and ruins the series. 5 has great gameplay and moments of brilliance despite feeling unfinished.
Death Stranding was just shit. boring shit.
