There was such a big gap in performance between their CPU's and AMD's, that Intel became complacent. They maximized profits by only releasing slightly better products each year and charging a premium price. Meanwhile, AMD invested a lot of money into research, and they came up with Ryzen. Intel is one generation behind, now, and they have to slap on more cores to even compete with what AMD is offering.

For a huge number of instructions zen 2 has higher single core performance than Intel. It is why in a lot of non-vidya benchmarks you see the 3900x beating a 10980xe despite the 3900x having fewer cores.
