The game gave affinity based off any interaction with NPCs. So talking, gifts given, items sold, items purchased, and quests completed all added points. So it was very common for people to get Merchants as their beloved.
Also the gifts value used factor in much higher, so a lot of people got Forv's little girl as a beloved for doing her quest.
