Sprite animators don't grow on tree. You can train a half arsed artist to do sprites, animating them properly is another story.

Also most people that did way back on 90s don't work on field anymore or even on vidya. Not mention that 3d models are thousand times cheaper and faster to do.

they barely make any new sprites anymore, 90% of the sprites in BBCTB are reused, and the ones that aren't look like shit.
Also their sprite animation has never been as good as old school SNK or even capcom.

SFV stays afloat on it's 50 chun li hats. In addition to sprites being expensive, doing the cheaper thing lays groundwork for microtransations later in the games life or is a value add for definitive editions for late adopters.

Sprites are too expensive in the long run. It simply isn’t feasible for any major game dev at this point.

No, the devs who handle the Smash models truly love the series they work on with a few exceptions.
The SF devs seem to hate fighting games.
