What do you think of the first Zelda?

She's cute I guess

it's the best 2d zelda, I wish they would make a 3d zelda like this, everyone pretends botw was inspired by it but it's not really

I went back and played this for the first time some time during wii era, holds up incredibly well. I think I would have enjoyed it more with a map of hyrule and as I understand it one actually came with the game when you bought it in the 80s. I've beaten it about 4-5 times since then, including once on second quest which was bullshit but the fun kind of bullshit.

Good game. Imperfect, but good. Probably in my top 5 Zelda games.

Underrated

only actual flaw is how bullshit stuff is to find without a guide when playing blind, everything else about it is extremely enjoyable.
It's still not Zelda II.

My experience is very similar to your. It is without doubt one of the best game on the NES, perfectly fine even by today standards.

What BOTW wishes it was

>everyone pretends botw was inspired by it
The only people that say BOTW is particularly similar to the original game are people that have not played the original game.

NES games that hold up perfectly today
Zelda 1 and 2
Punch Out
Mario 2 and 3
pretty much any puzzle game

Not very fun. Rather play Zelda 2.

punch out is so fucking bad bro

sounds like a post by someone who sucks at punch out

Punch Out is so bad that they made a new game 20 years later and the gameplay was 100% identical.

It's an okay 2D soulslike. Kinda directionless so use a guide. Dungeobs are fun.

it's pretty bad, hiding main story dungeons behind fire bushes with no hints is brutal, consumable keys that lead nowhere is bullshit, it was amazing at the time but lttp is way better if you're playing it today. play it once for history but it's not fun it's just frustrating

possibly my favorite zelda. liked it so much i played both quests and a romhack (the first and only time i've ever played through a full romhack)

>it's bad because I suck at it

Early video game design soup.

Very important but a little janky by today's standards. It was ultimately refined by Nintendo.

There are a lot more than that.
>Ninja Gaiden 1-3 (or at least 1 and 2)
>Castlevania 1 and 3
>Shatterhand
>Batman
>Mega Man 2-6
>Faxanadu
>Contra and Super C
I know I'm forgetting a bunch; the NES has one of my favorite libraries in video games.

>hiding main story dungeons behind fire bushes with no hints
There is a hint. It's not great or anything... but there is a hint.

Truth

You own me rupees for breaking my door!

I wish there were more games in the style of Zelda 1. No UI hints, no handholding just a world to explore.

At least there's Zelda Classic.

Fine with an overworld walkthrough. Surpassed in all areas by LttP.

One aspect which is lost on kids today is that video games back then had manuals, which helped to educate the player and flesh out the world.

Zelda came with maps and a manual which helped to guide the player along. Its why so many kids playing these games today get frustrated. You're not getting a true recreation of how kids in the 80s experienced this game.

SMB1 aged better than 2
also Kirby's Adventure and DuckTales

King's Field is the closest experience I've found to that and Dark Souls in general to a lesser extent

Its structure and the way you find dungeons is better than any other Zelda game.
The content has been outdone many times over though. Also not a fan of how bombs work. People point to bombable walls but I actually think the worst instance is when you have to fight dodongos, since they literally only die to bombs.

Don't they always drop bombs?

You also shared what you found with friends. I liked doing that again with botw
