Every other mission you’re either at a homeless shelter, a laboratory, or some military compound — and that’s just counting Peter Parker. Other missions you’re playing as Miles Morales or Mary Jane Watson in painful pseudo-stealth encounters.
The Spider-Man missions aren’t the best either. There’s almost zero villain interaction — they try to make up for this in the form of backpacks being spread across the map filled with pop-spidey trivia as well as the occasional lore dump during a J. Jonah Jameson podcast.
The game then throws everything at you with a hamfisted Sinister Six plotline that’s rushed and feels unnatural, each boss fight taking up two villains just to speed things up even more.
I like Spider-Man; it has good visuals and the combat is satisfying — but I wish it hadn’t leaned so hard into trying to be a feature film. We should’ve gotten a narrative that feels like it spanned over months instead of a tight story where things are crammed in to closely resemble a two hour feature in video game form. They should’ve done what I suggested, or maybe gone the Arkham Knight route where numerous members of Batman’s rogue gallery have dedicated side missions — I mean, they already borrowed a ton of other sensibilities from the Arkham series why not borrow that?
I realize I’m two years late on this but I’m replaying the game now and I remembered just how much this shit used to bug me in 2018. Hopefully they remedy these pacing issues in Miles Morales PS5.
The game is all over the place and felt like a more competent movie tie in game, I didnt really like the webslinging cause it felt so fucking slow, combat isnt as satisfying as Bamham, villains come and go so quickly, the MJ/MIles and Peter segments are pointless but with Peter I thought you would be able to explore the city normally and then get to change into Spider-man whenever but they only did that for one random mission.
All the next game has to do is make traversal more fast/engaging, make the combat have more weight to it also get rid of the slow mo finisher unless its the last guy, have main villains that dont get dealt with so easily or spread them out into side missions and no filler stealth segments then its a easy 10/10
Ryan Baker
Utterly agree with everything you said.
Colton Hall
Yeah, they nailed some things like the fanservice, the city traversal (I wish it respected momentum more, but you can't expect much for skill ceiling in AAA games) and the fighting which while isn't stellar it's fun enough to carry you through the game.
Something that catch my eye is that the game has very few actual cutscenes, all the story is dumped to you during those awful non-Spidey segments, it was either intentional or they couldn't afford extensive use of mocap.
Overall it is a step in the right direction for Spidey games, and now they have a base to keep building on from. Hopefully they don't fuck up, but I have pretty much no expectations for the next game, I'll just wait and see what they do with it.
David Moore
Its a snoy game
Ian Reed
is the DLC worth it?
Aiden Jenkins
It's weird that they added the stealth segments as some sort of padding as if people would get bored of playing Spider-Man in a fucking Spider-Man game Also I don't know who Screwball is but I hope she never ever comes back, I don't understand why they didn't just use Kraven instead of her or fucking Taskmaster, they felt like a random choice
Tyler Davis
>shouldn’t have leaned so hard into being a feature film Since Spider-Man PS4 is leaps and bounds better than every Spider-Man movie, I disagree with you. Also, it’s the best version of BamHam combat imo.
Caleb Mitchell
A lot better than the campaign
Jordan Davis
>traversal >not fast/engaging Did we play the same game, or were you bad at web swinging?
Oliver Stewart
>Since Spider-Man PS4 is leaps and bounds better than every Spider-Man movie, I disagree with you.
Lmao
James Walker
In regards to combat, what difficulty did you play on and did you leave counter markers on?
Tyler Clark
It’s not even better than the amazing spiderman flicks you dorky ass redditor
not to mention the doc ock/peter dynamic is regurgitated from spider-man 2.
Aaron Gray
It’s true. It’s embarrassing that Insomniac nailed the essence of the character better than multiple Hollywood attempts.
Julian Reyes
LEAPS and BOUNDS
Matthew Phillips
Spider-Man PS4 was fun but it’s definitely the worst Spider-Man game.
Blake Nguyen
Not that guy but I definitely agree
It does Otto/Peter better than SM2 Shows Peter being smart better than any Spider-Man movie Better quips too The ending is more cathartic Does a decent to good job with the Sinister 6 Aunt May's death was real good
Isaac Thompson
You’d have to be retarded to think that. The movies get worse and worse with each reboot, the game did it’s own universe and it fits better than any movie attempt.
Blake Martinez
At least someone gets it. The game does the Spider-Man character justice compared to each movie incarnation missing something major.
Nathaniel Wilson
You’re saying that it’s worse than Spider-Man 3, Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, etc.?
Jacob Wilson
Hard with markers off. Again, it wasn't ground breaking, but it never bored me.
Jaxson Nelson
Eddie Brock Venom is the greatest character of all time.
Daniel Price
Yes absolutely. I’m not crouched as Mary Jane in any of those games. Web of Shawdows Is goated
Justin Harris
I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking, but I’d call it the most satisfying incarnation of that type of combat.
Lucas Sanders
It's a snoy movie production.
Colton Martinez
Those stealth parts are the worst part of the game, but I can’t support any Spider-Man media that insists that the symbiote makes Peter angry and do rash things.
Angel Carter
It feels slow as molasses compared to like Web of Shadows cause it tries to be more ''realistic'' and the only semi fast thing is the launcher and diving also it would've been cool if there were other options like the web pits that get mentioned could've added gliding or even Spider buggy although that is too cartoony for this game or some unique movement ability with the different suits normal/hard with markers off but my problem is more visual/sound related cause Spider-man punches felt less satisfying than Bat-man like when Bat-man punches it sounds and looks like he cracked someones skull open with Spider-man its just meh and even the finishers looked kinda weak
Nathaniel Phillips
>better quips too
I’m dying over here bro
Ryan Torres
Yes, Spider-Man quips.
Ryder Miller
Have you seen the Raimi movies? They're fun camp but >It's you whose out Gobby; out your mind!
Adrian Adams
Huh. I think we just had completely opposite experiences. Do you care for Spider-Man outside the game?
Cooper Gonzalez
Don’t bother with him. He’s just fishing.
Parker Thomas
imagine thinking that any other spider-man game is in the same league as this one
Henry Thomas
Notice how the Redditors are making a case for the game being the best Spider-Man movie, while virtually failing to champion it as just a competent video game in its own right. Really just proves OP’s point tenfold. You love to see it.
Jaxon Moore
Everything you said is wrong
Nathan Reyes
Yes, you get the best suits (the real iron spider and mk1 armor aka the chrome armor) and the story is way better in the second and third DLCs, not sure if it's on sale right now but it tends to sell for $5.
Camden Sullivan
This
Cooper Baker
Nobody said it was the best Spider-Man movie, we said it captures the essence of the character better than any movie rendition.
