Friendly reminder:
Any speedrun that includes using of saves and/or console commands is not a legit speedrun.

I agree desu, I don't understand how something segmented like this can really be presented as "a speedrun" any more than the whole set of per-level world records for goldeneye can be considered "a speedrun"
It's objectively not a speedrun is it

Friendly reminder:
Setting rules for an any% speedrun is retarded. If the game comes with console commands, you would only be hindering yourself to not use them.
Also, saves? If you die, do you just reset the whole run?

>saves
why? lots of games use save abuse, like ocarina of time saves the game and exits so they can warp back to link's house.
>console commands
this makes a little more sense, but that's why we have categories. just play/watch a category that doesn't use console commands. it's not like people who run categories that use console commands are competing against people who aren't using them; it's entirely fair within the constraints of that competitive bracket.

Unless I have misinterpreted, OP means using saves to create a segmented speedrun and then presenting it as a single speedrun (which is what HL2DQ does), when semantically it's not really a speedrun, it's just a bunch of segments sewn together

Not sure about legitimacy but it certainly is boring as fuck watching a speedrun where half the time they're just saving and loading to slowly clip through the whole map

That's called a segmented run, which have always been a part of speedrunning. If they're presenting it as RTA, then the problem lies in their dishonesty about how the run functions, not the act of actually performing it.

Aren't most hotkeys in games just console commands bound to specific keys? Maybe they should play them with no inputs.

Using any glitches or exploits makes it not a real speedrun

retard

>middle of a hl2 speedrun
>a ragdoll clips into the floor
>now a fake speedrun
based

There is a single segment retard.

> segmented
> all those retards who don't know how save abuse works in source engine

Triples of truth

If a game allows you to save a game at any time, and load a game at any time, why should you not be allowed to use those functions in a speedrun?

Friendly reminder that TAS is the only acceptable and interesting form of speedrun

Its a non issue

Friendly reminder, Rules on speedrunning are subjective based on the game and it's strategies used to conquer it.

Saves as in save deletion trick. You skip a weapon/suit pickup, reach the new level, save, load and delete it as it's loading (or something like that), game gets confused and loads the default save for the level, spawning you at the default start position with all the weapons/items you would have acquired normally. Technically, it's literally like typing in map mapname in console. Your HP, your guns, everything is set to default. Which is both absolutely lame and cheating, because you basically interrupt the run and load a fresh new "game" that is not a continuation of what you've just played. Your HP doesn't matter, your guns don't matter. You're literally doing a "start playing from this chapter" new game button.

>Play game as usual
>Save right before ending credits
>Load it right at the start of the speedrun
>00:00:00.25 world record literally unbeatable

imagine gatekeeping something you can't even do.

>not starting with a fresh save
I forgot that Half Life 2 came with a save right at the credits. How kind of Valve.

It would have been OK if the runs became more interesting because of it, but instead they became lazy and boring. Previously you had to think about and strategize about: how much HP can you use up? What is the optimal route to get all the needed ammo and health resources but not a single bit more than you need because time? What will be your starting position on the new level and how will you use it to your advantage?
Now it's "lol I just press a few menu buttons BECAUSE MENUS ARE PART OF THE GAME THEREFORE ALLOWED :):):):):) and start a new map which refills my ammo and health and spawns me in a nice position, no need to think or plan :)" Same fucking excuse can be used to just load the last map chapter. It's the same menu, is it not?

>speedruns that use glitches in any way or form

Glitchrunners need to be ran out of the speedrunning scene

I like glitchless speedruns. I think it takes more skill in doing an entire game as it was meant to be played fast as possible than skipping some parts.

>glitch out of bounds
>float to the end of the level
>repeat 16 times

Sounds like a new category should be in order. The save/reload shouldn't be banned from any% since resetting games have been a thing whenever the spawn from a continue leaves you in a more convenient spot. I get how it makes the run more boring.

Exactly. People forgot that speedruns (paradoxically) aren't about speed, they're about spectacle. Basically "look at the cool shit I can do" instead of "look at this bug that if I jump here for 8 minutes the credits will roll" *cough*San Andreas*cough*

are you just pretending to be retarded? that's not how it works at all.

why don't you make speedrun a category that bans this then instead of whining about what other people do?

The fate of every any% run.

user, speedruns are for going fast, not for rubbing your entertainment nipples.
