I just beat Bloodstained RotN and Hollow Knight before that, still feeling that Metroidvania itch. What are Zig Forumss favorite Metroidvanias and what should I play next??

La Mulana

Environmental Station Alpha for something more metroidy.
Dandara takes movement and turns it on its head.
Overwhelm is a survival-horror metroidvania fusion.
Ori 1 and 2.

Blasphemous is getting a free update soon, decent little game.
Salt and Sanctuary for a grittier take with some unique mechanics.
The Mummy Demastered for a combat oriented metroidvania.
Iconoclasts for a cheery vibe with great art (I didn't particularly like it but its worth looking at)
Axiom Verge

Axion verge is really good

aquaria

>Iconoclasts for a cheery vibe
Maybe for the first bit.

Also, play cave story

Castlevania: CotM needs to be lower.

And has a sequel soon!

>no PC release confirmed yet
getting a lil nervous

What about steamworld dig 2

It's gonna be a switch timed exclusive first off, then a PC release later

>no

CotM doesn't fail in level design. It fails in aesthetic (and even then there's a lot of original assets to the game, the limited color pallet gets better with time and was only a fatal flaw in olden days of vanilla GBA) and limited options for the character. The DSS system is great however and contributes some much needed complexity in an otherwise very simple game.

CotM has amazing castle design actually, one of the best castles in the franchise. Meh everything else, thus the place.

Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Samus Returns, Another Metroid 2 Remake, Metroid Prime, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

If you've played all the good Metroids and Castlevanias, then unironically Shadow Complex. It's an overlooked metroidvania that uses the setting of an Orson Scott Card novel and it's pretty fun. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet was also pretty decent at the time as well.

need to add Megaman Zero ZX and Advent

bump

what else do you want nigga

Banjo Tooie

It's worse than 1. I'd go meh. It's not horrible, but water being unlimited and your movement abilities are insane compared to the first one.

Does he have a sword stuck inside him?

>its worse than 1
what a terrible opinion lol

system shock 1

Circle of the Moon is better than Aria.

ESA
Rabi-Ribi
Valdis Story
Salt and Sanctuary
Momodora
Both La-Mulanas

Stinky post.

Why is it always Hollow Knight being compared to Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night when superior genre entries like Cave Story and Axiom Verge exist?

most people dont even consider cave story a metroidvania bro
people compare hollow knight because it is the most popular, the most far reaching, perhaps ever in the genre

Cave Story isn't a metroidvania.
Axiom Verge is fucking trash.

Come on lad. At least mention shit like ESA or Rabi-Ribi instead.

Super Metroid and SotN were genre defining games. Hollow Knight is completely derivative with its Dark Souls mechanics

Cave Story is not better than Hollow Knight if you actually have some taste

yea, 20 years ago. it is undeniable that hollow knight has introduced new players by the truckload

based and ESApilled

I didnt play the first, but La Mulana 2 was awesome. If you want a 3D metroid game the Batman Arkham games are amazing too.

imo it always deserves the #1 mention

Hempuli is never going to finish that sequel.
Just like that Rabi-Ribi sequel.
Or Silksong.

None of these games exist. Fuck.

I mean if your argument is just that those three are babby's first, I could see that. Neither Super Metroid nor SotN are the best games from their respective franchise either, after all

rabi ribi and momodora are hardly metroidvanias

La mulana- Buy a notebook and take notes as you play. Looking up a guide ruins the game

>Cave Story isn't a metroidvania
Neither is Hollow Knight if you're going to be that nitpicking.
Get a load of this absolute faggot.

I'm sure he'll get around to it once he's finally done with fiddling around with Baba and Noita

>la mulana, hollow knight, env station, valdis, rabi ribi, momodora, harmony of dissonance that high

>metroidvania
ahh another buzzword that has become meaningless with overuse thanks to reddit

I preferred when they were called "action adventures" myself. Yes, I'm old.

If you want to use babby as the verbage sure whatever. These are the biggest names when you say the word Metroidvania now. This list of names has fucking SKYROCKETED in the last 10 years, and Hollow Knight is actually late in arriving, I think that speaks to how impactful it has been amongst the general pop culture and identity of the genre because it is very much so aping Dark Souls in more than one way, but it works, and it is very beloved.

>most popular, the most far reaching, perhaps ever in the genre
Mega retard. Super Metroid and SotN are leages ahead of shit like HK in terms of popularity. They fucking defined the genre and HK wouldn't exist if it wasn't for them. The things that are decent about HK are the things it rips off (but does it more poorly). Everything else about HK ranges from bad to passable.

Action adventure is about as useless as it gets as a descriptor.
