I particularily hate how healing directly eats on the hunger bar. It makes it incredibly tedious to manage in combat.

Early-mid game hunger is interesting, late-game hunger is annoying.

There needs to be food items specifically for late-game that significantly reduce the need to take care of what becomes a maintenance task - chorus fruit was a good opportunity that was wasted on a silly gimmick. Right now the only late-game food that's worth much is golden carrots which requires you to either break the game with villagers or grind gold ore in the nether

the hunger is terrible but not the real issue.
the issue is you basically need to be topped off at all times just to be able to heal which is hard because running 10 blocks basically stops you from healing since you arent at max hunger anymore.

Hunger is a stolen mechanic from another game that was implemented in minecraft half baked because just liked the idea of having it but lacked the creativity and skill to implement it in a way that is engaging and meaningful.

Hunger is shit and annoying to deal with.
They should have kept the old system of food healing you but put like a cooldown on eating so you can't spam it.

Here's a good way to do food mechanics

>You can make many different meals putting different ingredients together

>So an example would be if you ate mostly fish you could gain extra speed but you would be lacking strength

it's not just hunger itself.
it was the few patches leading up to hunger sort of leaving people feeling ripped off until when 1.8 came out, the combination of the above PLUS hunger PLUS world generation being made boring PLUS soundfx being changed for no reason PLUS no real content being added except for combat shit, sprinting and exp was the reason no-one liked the update.

People were already skeptical from Beta 1.4 with the whole Wolves fiasco.

tldr; we waited 6 months for an update expecting big changes (Notch had been talking about his future goals and being inspired by Minecraft) and all we got was fucking useless doggos.
This spawned a whole generation of mods actually adding new production lines and factory autism. Before then most mods were small inane bullshit like "it's liek diamond but 10x better and easier to find xD".

Hunger is an alright system but Minecraft has the most baffling implementation of the system that I've ever seen.
Not only you only get health regen at 90% hunger and up, if you overeat you get an almost instant regeneration effect outranking most healing potions until you "lose the excess hunger". Hunger pretty much doesn't drain passively. You can last many days if you just walk around slowly and kill some animals, but if you run and jump around the hunger doesn't last a third of a day.
