It's really fucking good, I loved both the first and second and consider them to be one of my favorite games, and a must-play for any self-respecting gamer.
It's really fucking bad, I hated both the first and second and consider them to be one of my least favorite games, and a hard pass for any self-respecting gamer.
It makes SotN looks like a complete joke.
It's really not good or bad, I loved and hated both the first and second and consider them to be games, and a maybe-play for any self-respecting gamer.
People call it a metroidvania and it's a deceptive way to describe it, it's more like Myst where you gotta take notes of stuff to solve extremely cryptic puzzles, and the action and exploration part is more like a side portion of it. If you don't want cryptic puzzles, you're not welcome in La Mulana
it's very good but nigh impossible blind
people aren't joking when they say take notes of fucking EVERYTHING and draw maps of every zone
Seems fucking great. Should I play both or just the second?
First is better than the second. Play it first.
based fence sitter.
cringe deciders.
Both are great, but the 1st is a bit more unfair in its puzzles than the second.
Play both, but play 1 first
If you want minimal-spoiler guidance, post a screenshot of your inventory on Zig Forums, chances are someone will be able to point you in the right direction
The 2012 version has a lot of QoL improvements over the 2005 version, but also has a problem with focus since it opens up later parts of the ruins for you from the beginning and also made some questionable changes. One example being, the falling pillar in the final level ignoring timestop for some reason, requiring you call the funny old man in to get smashed and physically lift it up for you by the power of being an old man. They tried listening to community input for some of the changes, you can clearly tell that they did, but some of their fixes were just plain bad and more confusing than the original issues.
Overall though, yeah it's still a good game.
I was quick to look up help anytime I got stuck in the first. I recently played the second and had decided I would make my own maps this time around by taking screenshots, cropping them, and tiling them.
It extended my playtime by a good bit, but I don't know how I would have gotten through most of it otherwise, and it was somewhat enjoyable to do so. I still ended up referring to the non-spoiler hint walkthrough a few times but I solved a lot of the puzzles myself and felt smart because of it.
For reference, both first and second have hint-based guides that will give you a nudge without outright telling you what to do.
>take notes of fucking EVERYTHING
this user isn't joking by the way. i played through with nothing but a few steam screenshots and some stuff in a notepad doc until i was hopelessly stuck. i ended up beating the first by spoiling myself a fair bit and it soured the experience. got through the second completely blind because i took proper notes and drew maps, and it felt fantastic.
In addition to making maps, I kept a document of notes. Here is what it looked like after I finished (29 pages long). Obvious spoilers for La-Mulana 2 so don't look too hard if you haven't played

Good. I'm still stuck at the fucking endgame and I'm too prideful to look up the answers.
Meme shit. Unplayable without a walkthrough.
Stay away.
Amazing game but obtuse as hell.
Also,
Depending on the version that you're playing, this isn't necessarily the case. With the 2005 version, yes, but the 2012 version gives you two NPCs that act as in-game guides whenever you're feeling lost, and are in fact mandatory to clear two particular parts of the game (Falling pillar, as mentioned in my previous post, and giving you an artifact that allows you to survive in the presence of Anubises). As long as you don't try to tank it all in one sitting, you shouldn't have too much trouble if you're playing the 2012 version blind.
However, the Gate of Illusions was made really retarded because retards couldn't find an invisible ladder in the 2005 version, which was right next to a sign that hinted at taking your own path that lead to two dead ends with no other way to progress. It filtered low IQ retards so hard that they took it out and made the solution to that particular puzzle to act like a retard.
It's great
It's great. Like the other user pointed out, it's very MYST like, in that the game actually expects you to take notes to solve some of the puzzles. Like, play the game with notebook by your side, or expect to take shitloads of screenshots.
Decent metroidvania, but you absolutely need to use a walkthrough.
La Mulana suffers from a horrible case of "the developer obviously made this puzzle in a way only he could solve".
>boss door is locked
>need to kill two specific enemies in a specific room without any hints to this fact besides their unique appearance
Shit like that. If you want to have a laugh, look up the requirements to pass through the Twin Labyrinths.
>beat 1
>feel ashamed because used a walkthrough to go past some point in chamber of birth
>play 2
>reach a point where I don't know what the fuck should I do
I'm not gonna use a guide but holy shit I hope I can find how to proceed
It's pretty good but EXTREMELY hard. Seriously, even if you're a really experienced gamer, La Mulana is some bullshit at times. Be prepared to get stumped and invest a lot of time into solving the game's myriad puzzles. Write down everything and take screencaps of anything that even remotely stands out. If you can, I'd highly recommend finding a friend to play it with, since you can help each other out in times of need. I did this with 2 of my IRL friends when La Mulana 2 released and it turned the game from a nightmare into a really fun collaborative effort.
For how goofy lots of stuff in La Mulana is, I really respect the series for keeping most of the mythological figures in 2 dignified. They crack very little jokes, and don't really end up in silly situations unlike Mulburk or rest of the original cast.
But I do wish they did more. There's some characters like Eros who really don't seem to do anything, not even providing help with puzzles. I would've liked more stuff like events in Gate of the Dead.
Shame about the infringement, the original Curse of Iron PIPE is so fucking good.
also OG Giant's Cry and Primitive Dance

Wonder of the Wonder grew on me too tbqh
Also the remake takes out a very notable part of the final boss that was thematically relevant and the remake's just looks really underwhelming in comparison to the OG.
which song is curse of iron pipe plagiarising from?
play the old freeware version if you can- it not only looks and sounds unironically better than the remake, but the MSX aesthetic makes the frequent trips into "outright fucking bullshit" territory go down a lot easier
this reminds me of something else. when i was playing touhou eosd i couldn't help but feel i have heard a certain part of a song in another game.

i swear to god this particular part of the melody is from la mulana, but maybe i'm imagining things.
I'm pretty sure they still included the original Curse of IRON PIPE in the 1&2 version's Original music option despite the copying.
