2d Sonic has always been superior. But what makes it better than 3d Sonic?

The lack of a Z axis makes the games easier to make.

3D physics are too hard guys.

2D Sonic is good, as opposed to 3D Sonic, which is bad. Hope that helps.

SA1 and SA2 were experimental games, and have their charms about them. I think they stretched themselves too thin and should have stuck with polishing the Sonic experience to be as deep as possible, but I would still call them valient efforts.

Sonic Heroes to Sonic '06 was a comedy of errors and I don't think I could list all of the possible mistakes they made.

Sonic was never good

This

>Hold forward to win
>Boss battles are awkward to fight for a protagonist who's speciality is running
>maps are kinda poorly designed

im convinced

No it isn't nice try though

Sa1/SA2''s speed stages were perfect. It sucked because development time was spent on other characters.

Heroes failed because bad physics, no momentum at all, and bad boss battles.

'06 did the same mistake like SA1 + terrible physics.

Lost world and every boost game is bad. Especially Colors. Physics are too far fucked to save 3D Sonic at this point.

Sonic was always about the unique level themes and good music for me, but to be honest its gameplay is mediocre at best. That loop de loop tho

Sonic failed to transition properly into 3d unlike Zelda and Mario.

2D games sonic games in particular are easier to make and utilize speed in level design and a large part fo it is due to advanced physics. A character as fast and mobile as him takes some serious skill that a Sonic Team simply does not have to make work in a 3D environment.

He should have been a one game every 3 or 4 years type of franchise.

No one ever talks about the 8bit Sonic 1. Had that as a builtin for Master System and loved it.

Mario's 2D to 3D transition perfected in 3D World. Lmao.

Le nothing was ever le good meme XDDD

If you run in a straight line in 2d you have 2 ways to go, back or forward.. theres not much to design.

In 3d you have to account for every direction.. which would be ass for a fast character, hence being squashed into straight lines in 3d games most of the time.

Also fuck having to judge the depth of field at such high speeds in third person. This is another not very touched upon issue i think 3d sonic games have. They tried to circumvent it by having a homing attack but it doesnt really fix the issue at its core, especially with things like environmental hazards and spikes.

3D platforming is an inherently casual experience, it's impossible to make it difficult or engaging

The 8-bit Sonic games are all garbage

>If you run in a straight line in 2d you have 2 ways to go, back or forward.. theres not much to design.
amazing how they completely shit the bed level-design wise in every 2d sonic game after the second level

3D sonic practically plays itself

The best levels in the classic trilogy are Scrap Brain, Mystic Cave, and Launch Base/Lava Reef

3D World and Land for that matter are both awful games

It feels smooth floaty and not as janky as 3d.

I really wish they'd make a game that focused more on the little animals again like 3d blast.. and had tails as a permenant partner who you could do cool combo moves with.

Would user want another sonic pinball? I thought it was kind of great!

if Sonic 3D Blast was made in the analog stick era, it would've have been received better. it is a nightmare to play on a Sega controller's dpad. its pretty comfy when played on a WASD keyboard though, analog stick would be better however

3D sonic is better than 2D because... just because ok?

git gud faggot, I've never had a problem with it. 3D Sonic is like a cross of a racing game with a platformer, it's not that much of a hard concept.

The 3D games keep getting padded with unpolished bullshit that didn't play anything like a Sonic game should play.
Generations semi-avoids this (Classic Sonic handles like shit though and doesn't do basic shit like roll when you land when holding down), Forces too (everything in Forces is terribly mediocre though so it doesn't matter). Colors completely avoids it -- stage design isn't ideal, has too many 2D sections, but it's decent.
Stage design has steadily gotten worse from Unleashed, which had the best of the boost stages by far.

also, to this day, I maintain that a Sonic game that played like SA2, didn't have the mech or hunting stages, and had a few modern QoL things (actions on separate buttons, lock-on indicator) would be peak 3D Sonic
you don't need to make 20km long stages and pad them with 2D shit, you can have actual control over the character vs aiming a rocket sled, it's great

You. I like you.

S1 8-bit is a rock solid platformer, and I think talking shit about it is flatly crazy.
S2 8-bit sucks dick. Nice music, at least.
Sonic Chaos is... kinda bland and easy.
Triple Trouble is pretty cool. Has some kinda screwy stage design late in the game though.

>2d Sonic has always been superior.
wrong.
>But what makes it better than 3d Sonic?
you don't have childhood nostalgia for 3D sonic, but you're too much of an entitled manchild to let the series move on without you.
