Why do the spiteful and filthy French have such as disproportionately large presence in vidya for a country of their size?

>Ubisoft
>Arkane
>Ankama
>Spiders
>Eugen
>Amplitude
>Quantic

Compared to countries like Canada, the UK and Germany with only a handful of well-known developers. Are they getting subsidies from their government or something?

canada at least, we have none of our "own" studios and are all subsidiaries of other ones (Nintendo Vancouver, Rockstar North, Ubisoft Montreal, Bioware Edmonton, etc etc)
tbch the only ones i can think of off the top of my head is Digital Extremes and the guys who made Maize

>Are they getting subsidies from their government or something?
no, that's why most french developers go to quebec

>>Ankama
>>Spiders
>>Eugen
>>Amplitude
>>Quantic

who

French games are in fact some of the most popular ones, with the Ass Creed and Far Cry etc.

>Are they getting subsidies from their government or something?
all countries are doing this. tax payers are footing some of the bill for your modern games.

Rockstar Vancouver is the Canadian branch. They did Bully. Rockstar North is the Scottish branch behind GTA and Manhunt.

You forgot about Atari. Infogrammes bought the name for some reason.

>spiteful and filthy French

I was thinking of Rockstar Toronto actually but you're right, my bad

France is a lovely country, I only wish their games were as good as their movies.

I think the French tends to embrace "childish" hobbies a lot more than most other western countries.

Before vidya became popular, it was seen as a childish (or very nerdy) niche hobby. So the industry never properly developed. This wasn't the case for France. Heck they even have their own anime industry, which no other western country do.

Quite ironic that our games turned into the fast food games of the industry

Better question, why has Canada only made two things of value, "Ed Edd n' Eddy" and "Trailer Park Boys"

Whenever I hear a game is being made by a Canadian developer I just assume it's going to be complete shit and have never been steered wrong in doing so. Did those two franchises just suck the soul out of the entire country or something?

>Compared to countries like Canada, the UK and Germany with only a handful of well-known developers. Are they getting subsidies from their government or something?
Canada has way more studios based on population, like half the game awards games are from canada

Yeah, but it's pretty good mess if you like 40k

trailer park boys is just a worse letterkenny
also you guys poach all our talent

>toronto
That's the one. Is Vancouver even in Canada?

You could say the same about Britain

>Rare
>Rockstar
>Codemasters
>Ninja Theory
>Rebellion
>Traveller's Tales

yes, Vancouver is on our west coast in British Columbia
i can understand the confusion, it's just Seattle-lite

Britain is the undoubted king of driving games.

Yes.

There's one American city I always think is Canadian and I've gotten it mixed up with Vancouver somehow.

The real question is why New Zealand is a gamelet nation, despite dominating the Anglo world when it comes to blockbuster movies. Most blockbusters are made mostly by kiwis with American money and NZ government subsidies.
>t. kiwi

Or Japan if we go by the same logic
>Nintendo
>Sega
>Square
>Bandi Namco
