It doesn't have so much bullshity laws which is nice, until you figure out that usually the best way to win a fight is by doing whatever the law forbids you to do

I’ve replayed the second one a handful of times over the years, but I only played the first game once, so my memory might be iffy.

Second one is definitely worth playing if you enjoy the first. One of the most distinct things to me (at first) was the law system was much easier to live with. A2 also has some more “systems”, such as the Auction House minigame which is useful for getting good items but can feel tediuous if you feel the need to do it every time and keep up your territory control.

In terms of plot, visuals, music and etc.. A2 seems to be hit or miss for some people, but i enjoy it. This is a point on which I’d have to play 1 again to refresh myself. Otherwise it generally feels more of the same.

One criticism I’ll point out is some people hate the job unlock system in A2. Some, but not all advanced jobs are locked behind side quests. This didn’t bother me but I’ve seen people hate on it (which I understand).

i don't know if it was in ffta or in ffta2, but i remember having a clan of viera snipers that used assassin subclass to cast artema blade at distance, basically oneshotting anything

Even then the punishment for breaking said law is no big deal other then losing out on some bonus items and clan privilege.

I just discovered Concentration on an Assasin in FFTA makes all her power moves 80% or better so I'm loving that and now everything is easymode. I also got Steal: Ability recently so I've been stopping or snoozing everyone and stealing all of their abilities

Another thing I’ll add, in case you’re a completionist: A2 is much more forgiving on missables and locked content. The first game had side quests you could screw yourself out of if you accidentally used up the wrong item (since some quests require specific loot items to complete) and it’s difficult to know what to keep without previous knowledge or a guide. A2 obviated this and it’s much easier to 100% the quest log (this is a fun challenge if you have lots of time to kill and want to sink 100+ hours)
