They think modern audiences will never play turned-based games, so they’re trying to merge it with action elements. The problem is that action games are intended to be single player, so they struggle to know what to do with the other party members.

XIII was bad enough, but we were excited about the next single player title. Then they made another one, and it was still bad, but surely they were done. Then they made another one, and Toriyama made Lightning a real person in modern Japan. I was just so sick of the fucker's fanfiction and horrid game design for four goddamn years and the majority of the PS3's lifecycle.

Part of what made things worse is that Square kept pulling a Square when it came to game development. Versus XIII and Agito XIII got announced around that time and they had to come out the very next generation.
