Embarrassing. Absolute fucking embarrassing. Joel's goal in the first game is repressing then embracing the love he develops for Ellie, as it causes him to confront his daughter's death and opens him up to the pain of potentially losing her again.
Ellie's goal is to assuage her survivor's guilt at having so many people around her give up their lives for the sake of hers, as well as to retroactively justify the awful things she does throughout the game by making them steps to some greater purpose.

No, now it's Ellie trying to overcome her pain and guilt at Joel having died with her being angry at him by hunting down the person who killed him, struggling with forgiveness for what he did in the first game and only being able to grant it after he was gone with no opportunity to reconcile, and finally being able to remember Joel as he had lived--not as he'd died.

Their goal was to not have sex while they're on camera from the tension I've been seeing between them.
