If it's pure FPS I'd say DOOM 2016, FEAR, and Titanfall 2 are the best. If it can include more first person games in general, Bioshock 1, Deus Ex, and SOMA are my favorites.

It's a lot better with mods that add more to the gameplay. The character class concept of Hexen is really cool but when each class has only 3 weapons it gets old quick.
