Why are visual novels getting worse each year?

It's been a dying market ever since torrenting and game streaming became popular. There isn't money in it outside of niche indie one-off games being able to make a slight profit.

Because the lack of gameplay gets more apparent and annoying as time goes on when contrasted against literally every other genre that has seen improvements across the board. It's functionally equivalent to a children's book being read to you by a machine with the convenience of being able to pause it.

over-saturation of the marketplace

everything gets worse each year

Just like in any niche medium, there's been a shift away from amateur and small-studio productions made by creative enthusiasts who are invested in their work towards lowest common denominator money-making projects aimed at catering to a specific niche fetish audience or homogenized for mass-market appeal.

no muramasa translation that's why.

Because even otome games have severe competition in mainstream markets. On PC, there's dozens of independent VNs being given away for free.

visual novels haven't been good since the 90's.

Do you guys think there's a market for visual novels in the west that aren't parodies/meta takes on the standard fare?
I've been fostering the idea over a couple monhs for one.
It takes place in the USA, is more or less a death-game with parapsychologic abilties, has no romance/H-scenes, but I'm afraid it might not take off very well since it's not directly "weeby".
I still have to polish up my art, learn to make some music, and even then learn to put it together but yeah.
More than likely it'll be freeware or very very cheap, it's mostly just a passion project.

as long as its not a short ass game (make it 15 hours minimum) then id say it has its place. just hire a competent artist and dont use a shitty ass tumblr style.

Elf is dead, Silkys is disguisting moege. old studios keep release their old work collection which takes money away from new releases. Lilith is making money with gacha, alicesoft can't seem to release more than 1 game every 2-3 years.

why make a VN when you can shit out an LN, get a anime deal after like 3-5 volumes and just cash out in 3 more volumes of dog shit?

so it's a death-game, which goes well with erotica, in a medium that excel at deep and engaging romance/sex, but you don't want to explore that aspect? Whats wrong with your brain?

I think there could be interest. There's definitely a niche for story-focused western games right now - people in the west have to play old classics or turn to Japanese games to avoid having to swallow triple-A big budget trash with flimsy or divisive narrative elements (TLOU2 being a prime example).
I think the biggest hurdle is the art. If you're going to forgo the anime look, you need to pay real money for decent non-tumblr character design and art direction.

Why make a VN when you can make ASMR with a patreon?

I enjoyed this one.

>Niche genre
>An stagnated market who refuses to try creative new works
>An stagnated market that can't grow, the entry level VNs are equally longer as an RPG but has no gameplay or other elements to attract new fans
>The casual consumer prefers the anime or even the manga/LN adaptations over the original VN
>The casual consumer prefers other media over VNs in general
VNs need to die at least for a decade so their market can reset and new developers and writers start to do good shit again

not sure if 20 year old jp males can make it big with ASMR but i'd be interested to see some.

I meant the voice talent, but I'm sure the writers can also try themselves on the ASMR and webchat market. It's a free world out there ;)

those are some amazing panties

its over op it was bound to happen

Question:
>Story is told via VN
>Gameplay is hardcore shooter/hack n slash
Yay or nay?

Indie VNs and moeges ruined the media.

Tbh that's the formula for anything VN now. With a few exceptions, VN format is basically dead in the water and is looked as lazy nowadays.

Things like League of Legends current event being a VN story which progresses as you play is a pretty great substitute. If there's more VNs that do this I think it'll make a comeback.

I've been thinking whether or not there should be routes, which would of course have an impact on length. But I'm with you on the 15 hour minimum. I'm aiming for 30+ hours for now.
If possible, I'll try to tackle the art myself. It certainly won't be anime styled, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't taking some inspiration from it. It won't be tumblr-core either,

I guess I've got brain problems. The only female characters I've developed don't really lends themselves well to romancing. It's full of individuals with varying backgrounds who would rather meet their own ends than look for a relationship. Interpersonal relationships are actually a very big theme that I want to explore, and even what it means "to love", but not exclusively the kind of love between those in a romantic/sexual relationship.

Despite my apprehensions, we do seem to be at a time that's created an audience for these kind of things. As for the art, I may just be stubborn but I'd like to do it myself since the idea of this means a lot to me. That goes for the music as well. I originally conceived this as a webnovel but I started to think a VN might lends itself better to the way I want to present it. Hopefully I'm not biting off more than I can chew. I still have a long time ahead of my before I start putting this together though, for now it's mostly preparing the skills I need and working out the story to completion.

Because gaijin won't stop pirating them

is true for the reasons mentions. I can't think of a community that has less knowledge and interest in its own history than that of the visual novel fans. Most probably couldn't even name a VN from before this millennium, let alone having played one. You can't know what you are or where you're going if you don't know where you came from.

The "new" Muv Luv photonstuff is out in steam. Without cut content patch.
Opinions?

blame capitalism and the mega SJW corporations

I would actually disagree about making the game long. I believe that the reason something like DDLC took off is because it's short. I'd go for replay value over story length if there's a concern over players getting their money's worth.

because they didn't exist as a genre before this millenium? What the fuck is this pseud post?

Moon and Kanon are literally the only ones, and they birthed the whole explosion of VNs in early 2000s
