I found the journey it took me on was incredible and I think it's actually even better than the original, but you do need to play it with the understanding that it takes a risk, and uses its characters and world to do something different. It's not more of the same, but if it emotionally lands on you like it did me, you are likely to consider it one of your favourite games of all time.
Some have found that they deeply hate the direction it goes in and consider it a horrible crushing disappointment, so you do need to accept that this is a possibility. If you have somehow managed to avoid spoilers up to this point, you should stop reading this thread (and indeed all of Zig Forums) until you've finished it.

I love the concept, but I think I have the wrong perspective for this game.
Spoilers, for the other guy who should have fucked off by now.
During Joel's death scene (I wasn't spoiled going into it), I wasn't thinking NOOOOO MY HECKIN' JOELERINO like I was supposed to, I was thinking how lucky Joel was for even surviving winter in the first game and getting to spend another four years relaxing on a farm luxurious by even today's standards.
Despite the great writing and acting, a lot of the game fell flat for me because of this. It wasn't sad or shocking enough until the very, very end, and I think people are way too easily upset. If this is how strongly you take your pixel video game daddy dying, how are you going to take real loss in real life?

The first game's story was so good because it was simplistic and was lazer focused on two characters, Joel and Ellie.
Tlou2's problem is that there are too many side characters, time shifts, perspective shifts, poor pacing and glaring plot holes. Joel's death was done well, Ellie's revenge wasn't.
I'm not against Ellie sparing Abby, it's her standing at yet another moral boundary but finally choosing not to cross it, but you need to give the player a believable reason for Ellie sparing Abby, they could've had Lev screaming for Ellie to stop, bringing her back to Joel's torture where she was the one begging for it to stop, this would make her realize she is no better than Abby if she kills her. Instead she simply sees a flashback of Joel and we're left to interpret whatever the fuck that means.
