i was never a big fan of hack n slash, i tried this recently and dropped it in the 2nd level. didn't get whats so fun mashing buttons, is there some level of play beyond my comprehension that i should launch up the game again for and give it a real chance?

Revengeance plays nothing like Bayonetta. You can offset using Offensive Defense but it's so limited and situational that it does matter much, and that's the only resemblance.

People don't defend QTEs much when it comes to Platinum, outside of W101's having humorous failstates and a really good one during the finale. If you want an action game that uses QTEs heavily in a good way then there's Asura's Wrath.
