They only pretend to cause FF7 is too mainstream and 9 went “back to the roots”

FFIX was the closest that FF ever came to a wholly self contained story with logical avenues for extra story telling. Nearly everything that needed to be explained was explained in the main story path, and the rest in side quests and such.

What stories are left to be told? Every characters arc ends logically and the back story of most of them are told and detailed (arguably except Amarant).

Because the only pre-merger games Square-Enix cares about are FFVII and FFIV.

One of the devs said they'd love to do something with it. Maybe FF7R will give SE reason to go back to other FF games, not necessarily as remakes though.

It was a very comfy and enjoyable game. What would a spin off do? What would it accomplish? FFX was a very melancholic tragedy, that felt very invalidated by the backrubs and sauna scenes in X-2. IX was all about bittersweetness; the good with the bad. What would a sequel bring to that?

9 is my favourite, but no fucking way do more people like it than 7 and maybe 10 as those are the ones the more casual fans choose.

9 doesn't need a spin-off anyway. It could maybe benefit from a straight remake that adds a little more content to give story arcs which got cut for development time, some small QoL changes like not watching Zidane go into Trance only for Vivi to melee kill the single goblin enemy before you even get to look at the Trance menu, and maybe having a few characters like Beatrix becoming party members.

But I would remake 6 over even 7 in all honesty.
