Xenoblade 1 uses leitmotifs just as well as 2 though. Bet you didn't notice Zanza's theme in Prison Island. Neither game does leitmotifs as well as, say, the Final Fantasy series though, where every character has their own one which is then remixed in different ways for different moods. Only a couple of characters get that in each Xenoblade game.
