Game gives you a plethora of status effects

>game gives you a plethora of status effects
>every somewhat challenging enemy is immune to them

>boss can inflict status effects on you but you can't inflict them

It's simply bad game design and usually jrpg's are most guilty of this.

Fairy Tail surprisingly avoids this, you can cast fear onto the giant ogre superboss and laugh as they waste turns guarding like a coward while poison eats away half their health.

any enemy that can die in one turn/hit are the only enemies that status effects work on. Might as well just one shot them.

>Playing SMT 1
>Enter the mind of the Heroine
>Hardest and Longest Dungeon so far
>One big encounter fucks up most of my demons
>Hero and Law Hero are the only ones left standing by the end
>Reach Boss
>Boss does big damage
>Have Hero and Law Hero blast boss with status inflicting bullets
>The Status effects buy time for my team to heal
>Kill the boss with just the two heroes
I heard the status effects are pretty cheap in SMT 1 but its pretty cool to hold your own with them even if most of your team is wiped out

Final fantasy ten bosses

The problem is that status effects are just too damn powerful most of the time. Anything that removes enemy turns? Can't put that on a challenging single enemy. Something that removes defense? You'd be an idiot to not use it all the time. HP% reduction? No point in even doing damage anymore.

The only obvious solution is to nerf the ever loving shit out of status effects, and that bites in to their ability to hamper the human player. Personally, I think a tier system would solve it, with something like, say, Shock > Constriction > Paralyze exists, with each tier having more extreme effects, and strong enemies being only vulnerable to the lower one or two tiers.

What are some games where status effects are actually useful?

Most of FF12 as well, but there's still a few that work. You just have to guess around until you find it.

Inflict a weaker percentage/damage/turns or times it can be inflicted. So many ways other than voiding everything.

EarthBound and Mother 3

>status effects have like 30% chance to actually land
>5% against bosses

>one of those status effects can instant kill a boss
>it works

>spam poison move on boss
>"the skill missed"
>"the skill missed"
>"the skill missed"
>"the skill missed"
>"the skill missed"
>don't know if the boss is resilient or immune to status debuffs
and that's when i stopped playing jrpgs

If it's missing that much its unreliable anyway, at least against that enemy, and you shouldn't be using it brainlet-kun.

Im playing Persona 3 right now and all of my cool fucking personas with effects that do interesting shit won't do fuck to an enemy. So now all I have to fucking do is choose the gay fuckin flower lady, pick Marin Karin and charm the fuckin boss over and over so he can't do shit. It's fucking boring, I have 5 fucking personas at a time because you can't always fuse them and I use like 2 because some of the status effects are literally fucking useless

I swear there’s probably more JRPGs that do this than not

>at least against that enemy
i love trial and error against every enemy

>Anything that removes enemy turns? Can't put that on a challenging single enemy.
You can if they take multiple turns like every single Dragon Quest boss
I remember in 8 specifically, making Captain Crow lose turns with paralysis or Jessica's sexy attack was the easiest way to stop him from charging up a 1HKO attack. Or you could use Angelo's Chilling Chuckle to reset his charge.

FF5, 6 (invis/doom worked on almost everything) and 8

>game gives you a lethora of status effects
>mastering them is the key to winning battles, including the hardest enemy in the game

God I love it

In persona 5 royal some enemies can only be knocked down with status effects because they have no weakness. The stronger an enemy looks that isn't a shadow boss the more likely they are gonna be hit by effects

or the better alternative: allow the enemies to inflict the same bullshit status effects onto you on top of being able to routinely dispel debuffs without being immune to them outright

Legit do not care about it being RPG maker. The combat in LISA feels fresh.

Plus Pointless leans more into Status Effect abuse in order to survive the boss fights.

>this fucker using the 'Oiled Up + Fire' cheese stat against you.

You could also break FF6 with Charm since nothing was immune to it
The game is falling apart at the seams so I don't think a lot of that is intentional

>boss is actually vulnerable to status effects
>attack only has a 10% chance to inflict said status on boss
>there's no way to know if the boss is immune or just resisting without looking at a guide so using status effects is a waste of time

>matarukaja
>ice break
>concentrate
>DIAMONDO DUSTO
SMT is a buff debuff game in bosses

In most DQ games status effects are really nice for dealing with enemies whilst debuffs like sap is really good for bosses

The music, sound design of attacks and length of the game help a lot in Lisa's case, especially in Joyful

>Every enemy is susceptible to starus effects including bosses
This is what made South Park Stick of Truth a joke, you just stack status effects until they die. It offers no challenge.

Even instant death spells are good for when you get jumped by a group of 8 enemies. Kathwack will usuall kill half of em.

I don't think I have played a game before where bosses are immune to all status effects, just the bullshit OP ones.Like really if you're expecting Freeze to work on a boss you're just a retard.
