Creepypasta was a holdover from 2000s Internet culture, it was a continuation of the "scary campfire story" motif. Like with almost everything else about 2000s Internet it's not relevant anymore.

SCP is creepypasta given rules and regulations. It helps focus a lot of writers because their creation will become a part of the world of SCP (so they will put a bit more effort into it) and any really cringy instant kill or instant madness BS is stopped because someone else will tell them no.

There are a stupid amount of world ending SCPs now though, which is fucking retarded and boring. Not to mention the SCP foundation itself is plagued by corrupted or mind controlled higher ups.

Chain emails with horror themes could be considered the OG form of creepypasta.

It turned real lame when DEAD GIRLFRIEND (no, I wont spoiler) came up. When it seemed to be a weird portal into a cursed world either far into the future or past, with strange creatures, it was great.
