Considering how well the games sell and review, why should GF "evolve" anything and threaten the stability of the brand?

Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword got good reception but Aonuma still recognized that BOTW needed to evolve to keep up with modern standards.
Game Freak is just a bunch of lazy cowards, content to keep making the same exact games over and over and over just because they know their braindead normie-nerd fanbase will keep buying it.

I see what you did there, pretty clever I must say. GF will make a new gimmick next game but still keep things the same, maybe dumb things down even further. With how much they made off of the last games that had less content even though everyone knew about it before launch I doubt it’s going to get better. They’ve found a way to milk players and save money doing it. It’s over for pokemon main line games.

>modern trends
Which is exactly what’s wrong with botw. (((Open world)))meme, weapon durability, stamina meter, cooking, minimum inventory space, etc the list goes on. The main problem with GF besides their greed is that they don’t play their own games, they chase trends and throw shit at the wall to see if it sticks.

>Which is exactly what’s wrong with botw
I mean, if you don't like BOTW then that's your opinion but clearly most people don't share that opinion
>GF will make a new gimmick next game but still keep things the same, maybe dumb things down even further
Pretty much, the wild area with Pokemon camp was a perfect opportunity to bring back secret base-style stuff but they're even too lazy to do that

Nostalgia breeds stagnation, that's the ultimate truth.

imagine owning the world's biggest media franchise and still being unable to do proper pathfinding in a 3D environment

Just play the many, many romhacks of the actual good pre 3D games.

Who cares at this point

its pretty fucking amazing how even dragon quest evolved but pokemon is still the same garbage

I do, pokemon was my childhood and they squandered it. I'd love to have good pokemon games but this garbage is inexcusable to someone with a brain.

I agree with the part of the image where it says game is bad but I disagree with the part where it says game is good. Game always bad

Pokemon sucks because they are and have always been games for babies. If you aren't a baby and don't like it that's perfectly normal.

Dumb post. Mario is a kid's game but Mario Odyssey, Mario Galaxy, and Mario 64 can still be enjoyed by older players too.

For its time it was one of the best handheld games of its time. Remember there weren't even phones back then. Now it's utterly stupid to play pokemon over a simple phone game. It's tragic, they sat on their wealth and let the nostalgia bucks wash over them.

>what went wrong with the Pokemon games?
Laziness and incompetence.

>Will they ever evolve?
You'd think the Pokemon games would evolve since evolution is a major theme, but no. The games have been getting progressively worse and have followed the same formula since 1996.

I felt that way too but you can only be angry and / or disappointed at something for so long. It may sound like giving up but the games have been of lower quality for most of the past decade and the strong sales and braindead fans show that isn't going to change anytime soon.
Better to find other games or enjoy different aspects of the franchise or fan projects.

I'm pretty sure you haven't played BotW. Even if you actually dislike the game, at least it is the right direction even if stuff like shrines is botched execution. BotW committed fully to making a new Zelda game rather than Ocarina of Time but XYZ again. They rethought how they could best convey the original idea of adventure that Miyamoto had in the first game.
Pokemon was an even bigger idea that same adventure with monster taming. Pokemon Red/Green did a good job of fulfilling that idea given the enormous constraints of the gameboy hardware and Gamefreak's non-existent experience. All the games since have just been Red/Green but with token novelties added. It is embarrassing that they can't reexamine the structures and conventions now that they have a limitless budget and hardware 1000x stronger than the Gameboy.

This post is pretty much 98% right.

Everything before gen6 > Gen6 and onward

Mega evolution was alright but fuck fairy type its stupid and broken. gen 7 was alright though some good mons, Ultrabeasts were fucking cool concept and Z-moves were an okay gimmick that stacked relatively okay with ME. Fuck gen 8 thought its were the line is crossed no more excuses absolutely terriblely desifned mons and the worst gimmick of all time both visually and competitively

Agreed.
I was playing pokemon plat renegade yeterday and even that was better than these new entries. Massive wasted potential is the best description I got for current pokémon.

>Pokemon just needs more filler and clunky open-world travel!

It's already getting that in slow doses. The actual problem is that they stopped trying to make good Pokemon games, despite what you think about that formula.

>It needs to either reinvent itself or fuck off

Pokemon will never fuck off, nor will the games reinvent themselves under Game Freak.

The games nowadays exist only as a way of initiating the sale of merchandise.

The games nowadays exist to debut new Pokemon. That's pretty much it.

Pokemon only makes about 20% of its overall profit from the games. Almost all of the remaining 80% is made through merch sales.

Pokemon is the most successful media franchise in the world. The only way this will ever change going forward is if Game Freak spend more resources on game development. And they currently have no incentive to do that.

Gamefreak doesn't even have the fair time to do all it can with games. The Pokemon Company is too focused on making sure there's a new mainline game every other year around November and Gamefreak must follow through

I still can't believe that no one threw a big fit about Pokemon Home being a separate subscription that costs almost as much as Switch online.
If Microsoft or Sony pulled some shit like that there would've been daily threads about it for months

>Lets see, should we focus on adding new features and revamping old ones to more accurately convey the setting without the limits we had with older technology?
>No, let's just keep the same tired everything and put our focus where it really matters - cutscenes of ten-year-olds! And let's force generic cliche 'save the world' plots into it!
This series didn't just fail to evolve, it went from a series that was about training your pokemon to a series about generic animeshit, featuring pokemon.

they've also started catering more and more to competitive autists who are obsessed with IVs and EVs and shit. Like Sw/Sh added a ton of features that make it easy to get Pokemon with perfect nature, perfect IV's, etc. but other features like the overworld design are either neglected or horribly outdated.
It's like they saw some Pokemon Youtuber getting a million views on a shiny hunt video and then somehow thought that those people are the main Pokemon audience so they added a bunch of features that cater to that group but will never be used by 99% of the players

>put our focus where it really matters - cutscenes of ten-year-olds!
but their cutscenes don't even look good

That's just as bad as the animeshit. IV's/EV's were always just a way to add more personality to individual pokemon under the limitations of the older games. You were never meant to know what was going on under the hood and obsess over grinding perfect ones, you were supposed to be like "Huh, this pikachu does more damage with it's thunder attacks than my other one, but less damage with tackle. Cool."

None of the games that he mentioned really have a huge world.
99% of games still have a small yard and try to convey a fake notion of a big adventure. If you put all Dragon Quest XI maps together and remove the loading screens, for example, you would be able to cross the whole game world in probably 3 minutes. BOTW probably needs about 20 minutes for the player to cross the entire map with his horse.

That actually started as early as Emerald. Morimoto, thankfully, plays competitive and he is the one in charge of battle balance as well as pushing to add convenience features for competitive players.

>That actually started as early as Emerald.
I don't remember Emerald, or even DPPt, HGSS, BW, or BW2 having stuff like hyper training, Pokejobs and mints

This. The Pokemon must flow.
