If FFVII has a sun, that's the only energy that is needed. It will sustain enough life for humans to be able to survive. Everything else is hubris, and we all fall for it.

Part of Barret's character is that deep down he cares more about using Avalanche as a tool for his own revenge and to deal with his guilt and grief than actually helping people. Something President Shinra basically calls him out on in the Remake. Him coming to terms with that, confronting his past via Dyne, and resolving to be better and do more to help people is like his character arc.
