What are they even supposed to be? They're just black dots for the sake of being black dots. They add nothing to the image. They look good on Black Mage's hat, and excusable on Boo/Birdo because they actually look like shadows and are located in spots that would have shadows. On every other character they look like shit. Remove them, and every single character portrait looks better.
