How do we fix the horror genre?

How do we fix the horror genre?

Step 1: Make a scary game

how

think of what scares you and put it in a video game

>smart AI
>good music/sound design
>rather short game so it doesn't let the player get used to the horror
the rest is optional

women?

Let Kojima and Junji Ito create a Silent Hill game with UNLIMITED RESOURCES.

1.Stop trying to make every game knock off Amnesia.
2. Monsters must always have a shape. Downpour's glowing something isn't scary.

I would play that
Like Catherine

This.
Also add great enemy design and some symbolism also helps

The Thing in first person.

port silent hill 1-4 to virtual reality

make a proper game rather than a 'scary' 2 hour experience.

I dunno man, just do whatever darkwood did. Scariest game by far. I haven't been that scared by even a movie.

>UNLIMITED RESOURCES
no
give kojima strict but reasonable deadlines and budgets or else he'll blow it all hanging out with random celebrities

Those that betray the Serpent God will incur divine wrath.

whoa guise! it's like he's looking straight into my soul! omg this is soooo creepy and gut-wrenching!

its impossible to make a good horror game without jump-scares because everything "normal" is played out at this point
if you want to make a good horror game you have to tab into taboo stuff and thats a no no with corpo's these days
sad times desu

>if you want to make a good horror game you have to tab into taboo stuff and thats a no no with corpo's these days
There's clever work arounds for that. Just make your pro rape anti feminist pro nazi horror game really subtle.

amazing how you come to the conclusion that taboo only means rape nazi anti feminism

yes

What do you think taboo is nowadays, the occult? Hereditary was a pretty popular, well recieved movie.

Forbid the western AAA studios from ever making them again.

Keep it short and sweet. Think campfire horror stories, nobody likes the guy telling the story that drags on forever

>sell it as some other genre
>include horror things in it

Also we could learn from current horror cinema. They've gone from slasher kind of horror to drama-semi real horror. Look at Hereditary/Badabook for an example.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite recent example. Pretty chill movie about Manson cultists, wife murderers and flamethrower LSD enthusiasts.

Horror games aren't scary unless you're a fucking teenaged girl. It's all about the atmosphere

Make weird experimental stuff, it doesn't need to always be a first person hide and seek or a third person over the shoulder game, we are so familiar with that set of cameras and FOVs it's too common to be scary.
Either go back to fix cameras and strange transitions or do weird shit with vision mechanics like Darkwood.

modern horror is shit
all they are good at now is prolonging a fucking scene in an effort to build up tension until "it" happens
if it goes on too long then i just fucking stop being tense and start wondering why im wasting my time watching a shit movie that does that kind of thing

I think it's not about building tension but implying the horror rather than actually show it.
The Orphanage is a great example about this, they show you stuff, but you have to put the pieces together to make up what's horrorish about it, and that can leave a mark.
Lake Mungo is another great example.

Why, so he can hire another few A list actors to pretend to be his friend and give him spots in his "game" for millions of dollars, while he pisses away millions of dollars in hard cash for no discernible benefit whatsoever. I unironically thought konami was 100% at fault after kojima left until seeing how he was acting at sony and his dev exhibit shit. Now im sure he mustve done some seriously stupid shit to get fired.

Limitations. Hardware and software.

>if only you knew how bad things really are

i don't want anyone from Zig Forums to fix anything. ya would just fuck it up.

sorry bro i disagree
most of the time i can pinpoint the exact reasoning behind the "le scene" and i just roll my eyes and wonder how the fuck such a movie even made it past post-production
i watched invisible man and while the beginning was tense it just kept doing it (prolonging a tense scene) and made it a chore to continue to watch it
eventually i couldnt finish watching it and went to sleep
