Macross was always kinda goofy. Literally in the first episode of SDF, the Macross' anti-gravity machines rip themselves out of the ship and float off into space because they didn't make the bracing strong enough. So then how did they get into space with giant holes in their hull? The captain is convinced to take off without authorization because some asshole politician makes a terrible argument that any sane human being, a seasoned admiral no less, wouldn't fall for even if they couldn't come up with a counter argument. He literally gets bantz into launching off early with a multi trillion dollar one of kind alien spaceship.

SDF is kino but goofy at times. The love story is overrated, but Hikaru's arc is very good. You can find better examples, but you can do a whole lot worse.

The original series is quite good. It has the jankiness of being a 80s anime when real robot shows were still being established so it can be kind of goofy at times, but overall it is a very unique combination of elements that you really didn't see in a show back then.

Delta started off decent enough, but completely collapsed by the half-way point as it became completely about the Windfags and Freyja. I get that they didn't want a love triangle, but Hayate losing all his attitude to become a hardcore Freyjafag and Mirage being a literal Mirage really didn't help the show.

The problem with Delta from what I remember is that it ended without really doing anything with its run time other than Hayate getting his expiration date gf. The protoculture plot went fucking nowhere, windfags didn't get btfo nor the usual wefriendsnow macross ending, a bunch of other races introtuced to only be background characters...
At least the songs were good as always.
