[Speech 100] THE EAST WILL HOLD THE WEST WILL FALL EAST WEST LEGION DAM DAM DAM
woah....so THIS is the power of obsidian writing...
What's the point of speech checks if you know the player will just savescum to get the result they want? Any smart dev team will know to lock certain results behind your stats.
>Clear-cut dialogue about how the Legion will spread its resources too thin for Hoover just like the NCR
>"LUL WHY IS THIS USING THE SAME WORDS SO MUCH I DON'T GEDDIT"
Maybe you should side with Caesar instead you fucking reprobate.
>Ooooooh East? I thought you said Weast.
bravo obsidian
>kill urself
>ok
>Whole game hammers into you that the NCR is spread too thin and they risk losing it all if they get too greedy
>The legion is fully aware of this and it's the main weakness they exploit against the NCR
>Use their own logic against them with 100 speech
What's the problem here?
Because they're idiots to not have already considered this themselves.
you have never played NV
I can understand the courier explaining this and having Caesar comprehending it and agreeing with the logic, but how could he hope to prevent the following insubordination that would come with him backing down? For me, this where the ending starts to fall apart, because he would have to give them a new directive and goal for them to achieve just to keep control of the legion and prevent a collapse due to infighting.
10/10 WRITING OH MY GOD
WHAT A GENIUS GAME
Lanius never considered it because is just a general and didn't know Caesar's true intentions, and the other Centurions are also just pawns. Caesar doesn't care about keeping the East so it's not like you could convince him, but Lanius has his own ideas of what he wants the Legion to be and you exploited that.
if you want to look at things rationally, why even let lanius walk away when you could instead kill him? literally who would let caesar's second in command live to see another day? you RPing as his secret admirer?
it's just an option to continue the age old trend of skipping the final boss with a speech check. nothing to be deconstructed beyond that.
NV was fine but I notice people get mad in WRPGs if they can't talk your way out of every situation. Like the final boss of whatever adventure would be totally willing to back down because they just didn't see things your way before.
Imagine walking up to the president of a country and just convincing them in one conversation that their way of life is wrong. Its like narcissistic power fantasy, even more then imagining yourself as a buff dude that can kick everyone's ass.
You're right about that. I guess I just wanted a fleshed out explanation to how things would end up after convincing the legion to stand down.
Are you stupid? It's not a %, it's a flat level. Either you have the skill points or you don't.
Why even comment if you never played the game. KYS.
>Not even a joke option like
>[10 Int] *Explode Lanius' head by going WOLOWOLOWOLO*
they just shouldn't have labeled speech-requirement options with a big shiny "THIS IS THE GOOD THING TO SAY" tag, having high Speech should give you the extra dialog options but let you figure out how to construct the right argument on your own
Speech checks are the single worst thing in WRPGs.
>duhhhhh I can talk my way out of literally anything I don't even have to play the game I just click on dialogue options in menus for 40 hours and call it good
And yet they have the gall to try shitting on JRPGs for being "menu simulators."
The problem with this interaction, and I guess all speech checks in NV, is that it tells you what option to pick. You just have to select the [Speech 100] option every time until you win. They should have made it so the player has to figure out which speech options are best.
Because Lanius hasn't half the insight of Caesar, the Legion is doomed anyway, and keeping Lanius in charge prevents anyone smarter from taking charge and potentially becoming a second Caesar.
Why? No, seriously - it's not a player based thing, it's a skill check. If you'd fuck up the argument or something, you'd just reload.
The problem is that you need to create viable ways for different builds to interact to actually make a game worth playing. For example, in New Vegas you can become a 1 intelligence, 10 strength, 10 endurance retarded cannibal and pretty much get through anything. If that was the only viable way to play, then the game would be much less popular. Likewise, if other builds aren't viable, why even give the option?
Hell, even in good RPGs the most bitched about parts will be parts where they sidelined different builds. Hell, VTMB has a patch allowing people to bypass sewers.
There never would have been a "second caesar". Joshua Graham straight up says no one can run them if you kill caesar.
>There never would have been a "second caesar"
Hopeful thinking, but it doesn't hurt to let Lanius keep running the Legion into the ground.
Well yeah you're always looking at a menu in JRPG's. Speech checks don't require always looking at a menu.
Agreed, luckily mods exists to fix this issue.
I agree. I wish they would get rid of the speech check labels for the dialogue. It would make the speech sections were you have to convince someone much more strategic rather than just be guided exposition dumps.
Yeah, but then you get into a conversation and see all the speech options, and go "ok that one looks good" but then you fail the dialogue because you didn't know you needed 80 speech for it because it never told you so, which would cause people to savescum and try again.
i feel like most people miss the point. this is the line that convinced him
>It is not the strength of the West that will slow you, it is their weakness.
This is the first speech check that requires 100 speech in the convo, for a reason. This line makes him see it from a perspective that he was not considering. To him its all about strength, and the stronger should win. But you make him see that it is the NCR's weakness that would actually make them last longer.
This line throws him for such a loop, that it makes him susceptible to being convinced to back down
whilst speech checks are even more egregious than aimbots, i don't see any other way of adding some kind of "communication skill" into a video-game
>i don't see any other way of adding some kind of "communication skill" into a video-game
then simply don't add one
finding out Anna Navarra's kill phrase is essentially the same thing as a speech check in terms of game mechanics, but is executed in a way that is so much better than just putting points in a skill and picking the menu option with brackets.
