I'd list Shovel Knight over Shantae if Shovel Knight wasn't already an assist trophy. But neither Shantae or Shovel Knight are making it in, but Riemu and Quote are unironically likely.

As I always say, the biggest thing in the way of any indie getting in is daddy Nintendo.

They have to WANT an indie, and honestly they don't bring anywhere near as much to the table as other non-indie picks would.
It's the same reason Geno's never going to happen. There's no reason Square nor Nintendo would WANT him over someone more modern that's got more market value.
Like, sure, Geno and some indies would sell. But so would pretty much every other big name game character with more value beyond just selling Smash DLC.

Touhou literally just did a collab earlier this year with Hello Kitty, the second most profitable IP of all time, because Hello Kitty's execs felt Touhou would bring them a larger audience.

people really underestimate Touhou's popularity and merchandise moving. As a franchise they're huge, much bigger than Banjo, or Fatal Fury.

For the longest time, we thought it was ZUN. He's the same dude that's denied offers for official anime adaptations and selling out for decades. Hearing he's all for Reimu in Smash was honestly a surprise.
