because it performed better and still does. amd had to literally rebrand the rx 480 (1060 competitor) to the rx 580 and slap on an overclock just to keep it competitive. it took amd 3 (THREE) years for it to overtake the gtx 1060 in games by which time the 1060 was the best selling GPU in history and top of the steam charts whilst the rx 580 couldn't even outsell the 1080 ti, a $800 graphics card. keep in mind, the 480/580 has the same amount of shaders and memory bandwidth as a gtx 1070.

the fps per dollar metric put the rx 580 above the 1060 (3gb or 6gb) in most games from release and the gap only got bigger since release.

at least in Europe, nvidia cards are VERY expensive here.

i live in europe and that's BS. until this gen amd cards were always cheaper. this is a screenshot from may 2017 and the 1060 6gb is way better value than the rx 580 8gb. it's because of amd's complete lack of competition, shit drivers and hot and power hungry cards like the vega gpu's is why nvidia are able to get away with price gouging. nvidia is the only brand people want because amd are THAT shit.

in france the gtx 1060 6 GB were all very expensive compared to the table you posted. The decent ones were around 320 euros.

Both brands have made terrible gpus at arguably terrible prices, the best choice is what runs your games at the best framerates with the most stability and least bugs at a price that fits your specific budget. There's rarely a wrong option on the market, just some are more sensible picks for the kind of games you're trying to play. Ex: You can buy a RTX 2080Ti if you want just for Minecraft, by all means, but if you aren't going to enable RTX features, maybe something cheaper would be more suitable for your needs. That doesn't make a RTX2080Ti a shit card, it's probably not the most suitable pick for your use case. And this kind of logic can apply to GPUs all the way up and down the stack.

Also the RX 580 was at 240 euros vs 320 euros for the GTX 1060 6gb

because it's an actual next gen game with insane graphical fidelity, as described in the digital foundry review. it's literally designed specifically for next gen nvidia/amd graphics cards with support for dx12 ultimate. RDR2 is in a similar boat. horzon is a 3 year old game designed for 2012 amd hardware yet runs like trash on modern hardware.
