What is the best game rating scale and why it is classical 10 points one?
What is the best game rating scale and why it is classical 10 points one?
1-4 are redundant if they represent the same thing as a 5. You might as well use a six point scale.
0-59 = fail system is absolutely terrible below college/university level education. It doesn't reward the more involved children who work harder than others while catering to the complete retards, because there has to be a certain percent of passing students and kids can't be held in school for too long.
Nah it's fine
Sometimes you still want to know just HOW bad a bad game is.
1-5 scale is the best and arguably the most intuitive.
1 - Do not touch
2 - Shit
3 - Mediocre
4 - Great
5 - Masterpiece
But if we don't use our incredibly rigid grading system, our students won't pass their incredibly rigid standardized tests and the government will stop giving the school money!
5 star rating system is good.
Out of 100 points is better.
Even moreso, a rating scale that breaks down how many points are allotted to which parts of the game being rated is best.
>Story 20
>Gameplay 40
>BGM 10
>Artstyle 10
>Performance 10
>Replayability / Online 10
So you can more accurately decide, assuming you're bothering with using a game review at all to decide, to pick up a game or not.
5 star and 100% is the best rating system.
out of 10 is shit.
4 stars is enough, like in film ratings. On your scale is there any useful distinction between 1 and 2?
Maybe in one of those "It was a shitty game, but it was OUR shitty game" cases.
Cumulative category scores are awful. The weight of each category is highly subjective, and could be argued to death. If you're doing category scores, the 'Overall' score should not be a total.
1- unironically bad
2- bad but worth checking out to make fun of it
This.
All reviews are highly subjective you fucking retard
needs updating, the gap between 8 and 9 is huge
the entire 10-point scale has been shifted into the decimal points between 9.0 and 10.0
yes, but when even your scoring weights are subjective, you have a problem
the classic "golden 4"
let me fix that for you
It's deficient as hell.
Only model that makes any sense is
>absolutly buy
>buy if your into certain stuff
>rent or get on discount
>never touch
The real issue is that there’s a lot of facets of game appreciation which are purely subjective. One persons enjoyment of media is fucking worthless. It’s interesting, but taking some fuckheads opinion from IGN as gospel is moronic.
10=best ever; 9=a masterpiece; 8=buy it now;
7=buy it eventually; 6=buy it if you are a fan
5 and below = don't bother unless you've exhausted all of the above
0 = garbage
1 = okay
2 = good
3 = great
masterpiece/perfect score is useless and only causes unnecessary debates
actually it's binary
>0: don't play
>1: play
Let me actually fix that for you
>rent
still? really?
To add to this, I think rating scales are stupid. Well written articles don’t need rating scales. Read the article. Form your own opinion from what the person wrote, not some arbitrary number they assigned at the end of it.
>finding well written, thoughtful and considered games (((journalism)))
Yeah. Right.
This but rescaled as follows
1 - Trash
2 - Mediocre
3 - Good but unremarkable
4 - Recommended, put it on your list
5 - Highly recommended, make it a priority
You could fold 1-2 into the same point scale and rate by 1-4 like movie critics, or go like Michelin food critics and refrain from acknowledging the 1-2 results. Which would leave the remainder rated by 1-3.
4.5-5.5 would be more realistic for anime tiddies
Think about the logical progression of rating systems.
Start with the most basic rating system possible:
>Bad, good
Add an item between each pair of adjacent items:
>Bad, meh, good
Repeat and clarify:
>Really bad, sort of bad, meh, sort of good, really good
Anything beyond five stars is fake precision.
scores out of 110 are the only way to go
Needs something around 3-4 that is "HIDDEN GEM".
>-5 to 5
Zero is quintessentially meh, and while a 5 as a rating should theoretically exist, it doesn't and will not be handed out under any circumstance.
the grading scale in your pic is perfectly fine
6/10 is the bareminimum for a game to be kinda fun but it still has issues. you are not going to touch or have fun with a 4/10 game. That isn't " just below average", its fucking dogshit. Enjoyment isnt a solid gradient scale, enjoyment is exponential. Start leaving out key factors and your enjoyment drops fast for a product
Just go to blockbuster my dude, after coming from toysrus and riding a skateboard yo
5 point system.
But really, the medium needs to learn that a mediocre game doesn't mean it's a bad game.
There are lots of cheesy B-tier movies that people love and they can admit it can't be rated highly, but when it comes to games, even an 8 feels like an insult that can destroy a reputation or bomb a game.
