How did Sony take over the home console market literally overnight?

Imaginations can run wild when you're asleep.

when all is said and done, where will the switch place itself? according to actual projections it will probably be between ps2 and ps4, but depending on how successful in reconquering the japs the ps5 will be it could potentially be a few dozen millions higher or lower..

they weren't in control of it yesterday?

NFL/Madden
Fifa

>projections

Call me when the Switch hits 100 million Nintendy

you are right about fifa, but nfl/madden/nhl/nba and all of that weird stuff is succesful only in america, where the xbox is relatively stronger

well i don't have a fucking crystall ball, projections comparing sales over the shelf life of consoles are a reasonable way of predicting results in business

with the PS1&2 it was due to them having a ton of games, with the PS4 it was due to the competition shooting themselves in the foot right out of the gate

What fucking projections, Nintendo systems always have short life spans. With the PS5 coming out the Switch will be nearing the end of its cycle as well. That's because Nintendo is always a full gen behind in terms of tech. The only exceptions were the Wii and that's because Xbox 360 and PS3 had insane life spans as well

Look at N64, Gamecube, Wii U etc.

PS3 shot themselves in the foot and still made the top 5.

Maybe the PS4 sold so much because, shocker, Sony has a monopoly as is evidenced in 4 out of their 4 systems making a top 5 best selling list?

but the n64, gamecube and wii u were all poor sellers, shouldn't the future lifespan of the switch compared to the lifespan of the nes, gameboy, gba, nds and wii, considering that it's even more succesful than them?

Publishers were really pissed at how Nintendo was handling things back in the day. In the NES days they limited how many games you could publish a year so they'd make shell companies and publish through that name to get around that, and later in the SNES and N64 days they'd charge a licensing fee, and were the only manufacturer of their carts so you both needed to pay a licensing fee and whatever rate they were charging for their carts, and order a huge amount of those expensive carts at once if you wanted to play ball with Nintendo. If you needed to use a larger amount of ROM or one of those special chips in the SNES carts to do something in your game you only add on to the ludicrous price.
Sony came in and offered publishers a flat $5 licensing fee per disc, and offered print runs as low as the very low thousands so printing on demand could be done, and reprintings were easy and financially viable to do. If you over ordered your production run on N64 you'd be absolutely fucked and eat a giant loss, for PS1 it was way easier to slightly under target what you believed demand would be, then do future printings to meet any increased demand down the line. Cheap discs also made Greatest Hits $20 rereleases possible while N64 games were routinely in the $40-60 range if not more. Usually they were closer to $60 while a retail PS1 game tended to be $40 even with multiple discs. Those things together made consumers flock to PS1 and try out a bunch of different things.

Fifa Gacha for the most part, everything else is secondary

This is a good point. However, it should also be noted that Sony moved Kaz Hirai from the music business to Playstation. This is someone that early on realized the importance of third-parties and would strike important deals early on to make PSX the most lucrative console possible. There are documentaries about this on Youtube but Kaz realized early on that it was through software they would beat Nintendo, not hardware. Hell Kaz saw the importance of indie games 20 years before Minecraft blew up through Net Yaroze. Way ahead of its time.

PS3 had fuck all games but then started to gain a ton around 2009-2010 while Wii/360 were starting to slack

PS4 is easily the worst sony home system by far and they only did well due to luck

Exclusives and keeping their mouths shut but they are going to fuck it up the japs should have maintained control.

PS4 is only worse than PS3 because everything is ported to PC now. But strictly comparing all games on PS4 to PS3, then PS4 is vastly superior. Not to mention the sub 30 fps hell that so many PS3 games were in.

>However, it should also be noted that Sony moved Kaz Hirai from the music business to Playstation
Yeah, Kaz came up with the flat rate per disc that they were using in the music portion of the industry and thought it'd be a good idea to do that in the video game industry as well. We probably both saw that same youtube doc.

Only good one is PSX

Top 5 reasons why gaming is casual trash today

I actually did not know that particular detail. But it doesn't surprise me when you say it. The way he was approaching third-parties was some Matrix shit compared to Nintendo that had an active interest in keeping third-parties supressed as not to overshadow their own titles.

PS3 sold better than 360? Really?

Like 90% of my friends at school had a 360, for what it’s worth.

It's a well known fact Sony lies about their console and software sales. The numbers are likely half of those, if that.

The number one reason is Super Mario.

Are you American? PS3 was really popular in portions of Europe and Asia which means despite a massive US lead, PS3 had the advantage worldwide.

Only after the 8th gen started. 360 was leading the entire time they were relevant

It's actually probably closer to a quarter, PS2 barely sold 5 million in Japan

Super Mario isn't even a game

cope

Nintendo, SEGA, and NEC were abusive towards third parties, Sony wasn't and embarrassed them. Combined with an easy to develop for platform, low-cost media, marketing support, publishing support, an indie program, and production control in developer hands, you'd have had to be an idiot to avoid the PS.

Switch will outsell Playstation 4, meaning Nintendo will win 2 generations out of 4

By pandering to casuals that love sports games

You can't compare handhelds to consoles. Too different demographics. You're better off comparing Switch to iPhone and shit.

Nintendo thought they were top dog and could sit back and let the money roll and every dev would have to obey their demands. Sony actually saw what the future would be like and beat them to the punch.
Maybe in America but Xbox always had trouble getting better sales in Europe and Asia, which is usually more Sony oriented plus whatever Nintendo is doing.

the ps4 beat the wii u
sony won 4 out of 5 generations
