I suspect this isn't just a move on Sony's part, but an alliance with large publishers to counter microsoft Gamepass. If Sony sells more consoles than microsoft then big Publishers are safer to make more money that they could potentially lose through people being hooked on Gamepass.

Because it's easier to bank on Sony possibly getting a third party game exclusive than gambling on an xbox that has for three generations now shown it is likely to get exactly fuck all, and even if it DOES later get ports like Nier:Automata or Yakuza, for the longest time it didn't and even then it's STILL on the PlayStation anyway but at least the PlayStation STILL has more exclusives. xbox literally tried to sell you a console that wouldn't work at all without an internet connection, and not allow you to buy used games or play discs other people have bound to their systems, meaning you couldn't swap with friends. Anyone with half a braincell recognises that Microsoft's overdelivering on the value of game pass to establish market share in the video game Netflix space.
I have it stacked for two years at about 6 AUD monthly which is pretty cheap for the content you get in exchange. It'll likely become a big success because of this until copycats emerge and games are pulled onto other services that try to do the same thing, but by that point game pass will have attracted enough brand recognition for it to have been worth it.
It's extremely pro consumer in the meanwhile.
