I tried to pick up another metroidvania from the backlog, Valdis Story, and tried to get into it.
But I couldn't. I felt Valdis developers were trying too hard. Minimap was shit. Getting shitty crafting materials didn't feel like a reward at all, especially when you had to go through timed platforming sections to get some of them. Multiple vendors in multiple towns to make it even more bothersome to find the one you need. Background-foreground distinction not always clear. Clunky-feeling combat.
Why the fuck did this game receive so much praise? Completely unwarranted, can't even beat Gato Robot in enjoyability, despite the 2 colors restriction and way less useless systems and unnecessary rpg memes.
>Valdis Story the art is shit. would take some basic crappy pixel art over what that game had any day.
Jose Collins
>I felt Valdis developers were trying too hard. I don't know about that. It's chuuni as fuck which can be kind of cringe, but at the very least it came across as genuine which makes it kind of soulful. Beyond that it just seems like it was never meant to be too much of a Metroidvania. Regardless it sure sucks as one. But if you just think of it more along the lines of Megaman Zero 1. Then that'd probably be more accurate to what Valdis Story is. Down to the ranks after every boss fight.
It's more of an action game than a "metroidvania". And though it's chuuni as fuck, there is an almost shocking amount of lore and story to the game. The world is surprisingly well realized.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps was pretty good and full of feels. I would definitely recommend the series.
Just be careful that you need the base Dash in order to perform any other Dash ability, I was so very fucking confused that the button prompts on the screen didn't work, I thought my save was fucked or something but no, I was just missing the shitty base dash ability.
>Down to the ranks after every boss fight I fucking hated that shit. Prizes gated to the rank, and once done you can't retry later. Unless reloading.
Connor Diaz
Alwas awakening felt like a chore halfway into the game. Dropped. Maybe the sequel will be less of a slog.
The messenger was funny, but I ended up dropping it at 3/4 of getting the requirements for the true ending, instead I played the rest on youtube, because some of the platforming parts were just too tedious and required too much backtracking.
Chasm decent but would have been better without the utterly useless gimmick of randomizing the map. All that effort could've been used to make locations more memorable.
Blasphemous great pixel art, although gameplay-wise spikes and pitfalls were far more challenging than the actual bosses. The game doesn't tell you right away that health flasks and rosary bead must be used at specific location in order to make them effective. Kinda weird, made me feel MC is a retard that needs their mom for basic shit like cleaning the drool from their mouth and tying their shoes. Despite those drawbacks I enjoyed playing this game, definitely recommended.
La Mulana it would have been tedious without a guide, can't remember if it was enjoyable, but at least I finished it. Haven't yet tried the sequel.
Guacamelee It's was a nice metroidvania with an unique style. I have yet to try the second installment.
Dead cell not a fucking metroidvania, tryhard roguelite shit, joke fuck you ending
Unepic a chore, dropped halfway
Slain I like metal, but the poor graphics killed it for me, even I can draw better sprites. Dropped.
Momodora reverie Good metroidvania
Luna Nights Short and decent
Julian Robinson
I tried playing Aquaria after having it on my wishlist for years and I was incredibly disappointed. Shit combat, unrewarding exploration and the biggest fucking empty shit map I've ever seen in a game like this.
I tried La Mulana 2 today and was surprised that it came out in 2018, considering the shitty player movement. Why do modern games implement these shitty old air controls, where the game can't decide between letting you control yourself and not? Saw this in super metroid too, but that gets a pass since it's quite old. As for good games, Hollow Knight and Ori 2 are great.
Jaxon Ross
The air controls harken back to La-Mulana 1 and the Remake. It's old fashioned and a design choice most won't like. Best metroidvanias in my steam library: Hollow Knight, as always.
Steamworld Dig 2, which I like more than HK due to its brevity and basically every aspect of it being great
UnEpic, but you've got to be able to enjoy low-ish production values
Guacamelee has a lot of great platforming
Headlander is a nice little visual treat but you won't have to think much about any puzzles
Ghost 1.0 is another game by the dev of UnEpic and it's similar in quality, both are clearly made by a lover of metroidvanias
There's little point in platforming challenge at all unless there are restrictions to jumping. You either have that restriction or make the white palace
Jacob Powell
>I tried La Mulana 2 today and was surprised that it came out in 2018, considering the shitty player movement. Its on purpose. Haven't you play la mulana(1)?
Kayden Hill
I bet your braindead reddit ass loves Hollow Kuck
Aiden Hughes
>La Mulana >it would have been tedious without a guide, can't remember if it was enjoyable, but at least I finished it. Haven't yet tried the sequel. the puzzles in la mulana are pure garbage. Without a guide the game is not only a chore but impossible. Man how I hated the puzzles in that game. Great music, atmosphere and world. And the bosses are insanely hard. Great game except the puzzles are utter garbage.
Have you played super metroid? whats your verdict of that and am2r?
Adam Hill
Starting Blasphemous recently, it's gorgeous but damn is it kinda tricky. Maybe I just didn't pick the best direction to go in.
Caleb Smith
Can you elaborate on that bit about Blasphemous and using flasks in particular locations?
Asher Ramirez
Newer shantae's suck ass
Jayden Johnson
Blasphemous is on the easy side I'd say and I played it before they made the plateforming easier. Harder than IGAvania but easier than HK.
Landon Collins
watch you feet when you jump over pits. For some items you need to change item equipments to make them easy, like increased counter stance duration.
I also like Dark Devotion, but its a rogue lite, not a metroidvania. Reminds me of Blasphemous.
Luis Reed
Any metroidvanias with fun movement? I like the grappling hook in Environmental Station Alpha and the booster and overall physics in Cave Story (though it's arguably not a metroidvania).
Noah Gomez
If you're looking for a very okay experience, pick up The Mummy Demastered. It's perfectly fine. Not really bad in any particular way, just never really blows you away. But it's usually pretty cheap and it a nice way to kill a weekend.
if you have really good speakers the music in that game is great. The game is really good and would be perfect if it didn't have the utterly trash Mummy branding and if it had much more sex appeal instead of that garbage military vibe...
Thomas Ross
Guacamelee is great. It makes you use your attack moves for movement and platforming. For example, your uppercut special is also a double jump
I dunno. Like I said, I'm not far into Blasphemous. HK doesn't have insta-death pits and spikes, and you only have one shade at a time, so if you die on your way to collect the last one you can just forget about it. So Blasphemous may not be harder, but it sort of punishes your mistakes more.
Leo Watson
It's fun but why the fuck doesn't it have a map?
Ryan Cox
I found Sundered pretty fun. Some of the movement comes in the form of attacks which I always love when games do this. Instead of just adding more movement mechanics they actually blend it with attacks. Shovel Knight, in particular King of Cards does this amazingly well, even though it's obviously not a metroidvania.
Lucas Russell
>Mech Chip it's Gato Roboto but you can change palettes at any moment. everything else is worse, but the game's cheap at least >Escape from Tethys mediocre and frustrating gravity gimmick. movement options are all obtain near endgame. Both difficulty settings are vastly different so just pick the normal mode so you don't tear your hair out. >Dex Flawed gem of a game IMHO. I suggest getting it on sale since it gets them often. >MindSeize Pretty good futuristic metroidvania. combat and movement are pretty alright but get better as you progress. designs are also well done. >Omega Strike cheap metroidvania that's more tedious than fun because you play as three different characters that you constantly have to switch, and most of the upgrades only go to one character either way so the character gimmick was unnecesary. >Inexistence Bad game with a bunch of awful glitches that the dev refused to fix, opting instead to make a new version of the game entirely, which I'm not purchasing. >Super Skelemania parkour skeleton game that lasts about an hour. too pricey for what it is, though there's a speedrun achievement. >Feudal Alloy Only good thing about this game is the artstyle. Platformings basic, but there's a bunch of backtracking and the combat's design makes it so that you can only fight one enemy at a time to be safe when the game throws gauntlet rooms at you. >Hunter's Legacy I genuinely couldn't figure out anything on this game after the tutorial. still, it doesn't play great. >KUNAI short game with good artstyle, fun movement and two bullshit bosses. maybe it plays better on controller, but I only use mine for racing or fighting games. >CARRION I tried it out, but it's not for me. also $20 for a few hours is ridiculous >CryoGear it's a roguevania (which I already dislike), but it has nothing worth mentioning. >Reventure fuck this game >Mini Ghost great game for those that like retro difficulty, and it's pretty cheap too
I don't get how Gato Roboto became so popular. I admire some of its simplicity but its nothing to write home about, specially when the only joke the game has is "lol, cat".
