Animal Crossing New Horizons was so successful because it recognized the flaw of the previous games and took measures to fix it. Even though it's still not perfect, it at least tried to fix the issues.

All the older Animal Crossing games have a serious flaw, where after about a week or two of playing you start running out of shit to do. You've caught all the fish/bugs in the current season. You've upgraded your shop a few times. You got a ton of fossils donated to the museum, etc. After that point all you do is login each day to check the store before immediately logging out, because there's NOTHING ELSE to do.

In New Horizons there is ALWAYS something to do. This is what they did to achieve that:

1.The crafting system. Each day you get multiple new recipes to craft things. In order to craft them you have to get materials, which involves interacting with the game world.

2.The nook miles system. You have an unlimited number of missions each day you can get to rack up nook miles points. With these points you can buy cool decorations for your town or visit a random island. If you visit a random island you can get one that is very valuable, which makes it always worth amassing these points.

3.Decorating the outside. It takes an immense amount of time and effort to decorate the outside of your town. Saving up nook miles points to buy decorations, planning things out in general, terraforming, buying bridges and inclines which are expensive as fuck, buying expensive furniture to decorate your town, breeding flowers, etc. Decorating your town is no fucking joke. It is a monumental task.

4.Random balloons. Every so often a balloon will come by with a random present, sometimes you can get really good shit so it's always worth going for.

5.Each day you can give every villager one present to boost your friendship level.

There's more stuff I could add but you can get the idea. In new horizons they put all the effort into giving you more stuff to do.

The saddest thing about having a designated animal crossing hate thread every day is that actual animal crossing threads get deleted for no reason.

It really feels like the in-house Pokemon of this gen. Both somehow take features away from previous entries and manage to somehow incorperate more tedium as a substitute for content, while getting a free pass for being "HD" and on a home console. Durability on tools is the single most retarded inclusion to a franchise I have ever seen. It adds nothing other than asking the player to either go back home to grab sticks and stones, or prompt them to clutter inventory by carrying a stack of them. You can't craft multiple items at once. It adds no engaging interaction with the world other than the time engagement required to access a crafting table, mash button, and resume activity. But that's okay, because it swapped the word "gender" with "style" and lets my boy character wear dresses like a faggot. So progressive. So brave. I'll take 3 copies. 10/10.

With recent games Nintendo has been focusing more on intrinsic vs extrinsic rewards. They want you to set your own goals and do things the way you want. New Horizons can have a lot of depth if you want it to but the game isn't going to force you to interact with it in a deep way if you don't want to.

You would get what I mean if you saw my town vs my sister's town. My sister's town is so fucking lazy. She just flattened the whole town and stuck a couple buildings around haphazardly. Meanwhile every square inch of my town is planned out, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time and effort getting all the right flowers for decorating it the way I wanted.

Is this gonna be the new argument? TOK is the Pokemon of Paper Mario, New Horizons is the Pokemon of Animal Crossing. Is BotW 2 gonna be the Pokemon of Zelda?

It literally fixed none of the problems you stated the series had. You can't even upgrade the shop multiple times in this one. You can get duplicate crafting recipes, so that can stop giving you new things if you're unlucky. There aren't too many items to get with nook miles either, so you run out of those. Balloons were in all of the other games and so was giving villagers presents. They made it a sandbox and I'd rather play a different game if I wanted a sandbox.
