Is it even possible to save the horror genre at this point? Did it get stale or did we just grew up?

It needs to be more Dead Space, less Outlast.
You unironically just need really loud jumpscares. Puppt Combo does horror right.
More movies like The Thing.
People just need to get more creative with enemy encounters. RE2 Remake is a good example because the zombies are slow but they're threatening because you gotta consider if they're worth taking on because of your limited resources and then you got Mr X who's even more threatening because he can be anywhere at any time.
Instead of monsters and hiding in closets make some cool threatening monsters with different kinds of behaviors and tactics.
Pretty sure we just grew up. Once you get used to all the gimmicks used in horror games they stop being scary. Until some peeps come up with novel shit they just won't be spooks.
Saving them would mean less focus on trying to scare you and shifting to unnerve you. Like thrillers.
>more action less horror
You haven't played a single horror game in the past 5 years so you have no say in this matter.
Dead Space 1 and 2 had plenty of horror elements. 3 was where Isaac went full action hero. Being able to fight the monsters doesn't automatically destroy the scary factor, in my opinion.
>someone wasted their time drawing that pic
Speak, then.
Wasted time how?
The ocean is a scary place. Lets try that.
It's perfectly fine as it is.
>Mostly watch other people play horror games nowadays because nothing scares me anymore
You watch them play because you are a fucking pussy who is scared.
Even the fuckers who I watch playing horror games don't get spooked anyways. Maybe I should start watching zoomer streamers next.
Real life is more horrific than any game could ever hope to be.
Subnautica except way darker and made with the RE Engine.
Scared of what? Everything released in the last few years has only had jumpscares, and most of them are in the most obvious places they could possibly be. It's getting old.
Problem with horror is the best of it relies on tension and the unknown. With video games, you cannot really get that anymore. Shit gets dissected endlessly, people always want that "power moment" of a boss fight where you finally confront and kill the big bad whatever the fuck, etc.
A proper horror game should leave you wondering if there ever was a monster in the first place.
Of course they don't get spooked if they are reading the chat and getting donations every second while playing the lights on you retarded fucker.
Wrong. Most games have amazing atmospheres that you aren't going to feel from watching some shitty stream you soulless fucker.
Name one
>With video games, you cannot really get that anymore
There are 100 games like that released every month you nigger.
>start playing horror game
>huge pussy so I don't play for more than an hour.
>the game stops being scary when you figure blew all of its load in the beginning and mid through late game it doesn't spook you anynore
Always the same and this is why I only buy games from this genre at half price. Fatal Frame 2 was the last game that made sweat bullets from start to finish
Observation
I know Hunt Showdown isn't really a pure horror game, but the sound design and atmosphere are phenomenal.
yoooo they t posin!
>People just need to get more creative with enemy encounters.
This. I'm glad we have established that run and hide is a terrible formula for a horror game.
>YouTuber video
>5 second preview that consist of OIAHDOIAFF OH MY GOD WHAT WAS THAT
>whiplash cutaway to intro with lofi chillbeat in the background
>HEY GUYS CUM GUZZLER MCGEE HERE
>ad for raid shadow legends
>OKAY BEFORE WE BEGIN DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE
>game starts
>SO ANYWAYS LET ME TALK OVER THE GAME AND KILL ANY SUSPENSE OR TENSION IT MIGHT BE BUILDING
Wow you sure showed us how brave and cool you are.
I watch them because they actually get scared. I've already played all of the shit they're playing.
Lack of creativity is the only issue with horror. There's still good games coming out but in the majority of them the gameplay is just walk around and wait for something to scream at you. I'm sure there's a lot of good concepts floating around but what people who try to make new horror, or even worse homages to old horror don't understand is that you need gameplay.
Yeah, Silent Hill scared you when you were 10 and you want to have a vaguely sexual monster in your game, but is that the only thing you remember? Did you forget that the other 99% of the game had puzzles, combat, quality level design and backtracking? We need less games where the entire premise is you are in a house with ps1 graphics with a ghost that makes a loud noise when you do something and more Kuon, Fatal Frame, Siren style games. Dreadout, Daymare, Lost in Vivo, and Cry of Fear are the only games I can think of other than continuations of PS1/2 franchises that managed to remember that horror games are supposed to be games.
Fatal Frame 2
The problem with the horror genre in video games is because it relies on a challenge. For example, that very picture: looking at it, I can definitely understand why it would be a horrific scene to witness, but within the context of a GAME, what's the danger? Are these T-posing humanoids coming to get me? Do I get a gun or do I need to hide? Whatever the answer, it's already been done to death. I'm already tired of running around not looking behind me lest I get some screamer death screen, and every single shooting mechanic has been done.
Yes, you can conjure up whatever scary and horrific concepts as stories, pictures - any kind of non-interactive medium. But for vidya there needs to be something else that makes it actually interesting.
