Why does it feel like horror has peaked over ten years ago and devs have never been able to reach games like Silent Hill 2 or Dead Space?

Alien Isolation>Dead Space, so you're wrong. SH games were lightning in the bottle though.
because the new horror games rely on leaving the player defenceless and the Dev's try to go for a psycological horror, leaving the game as a Silent Hill wannabe
>Dead Space
That shit was horror for all of 10 minutes.
After you get a gun you're never afraid again.
nostalgia lol
Saving as a resource was a good idea.
Fear of losing progress escalates any tension created by the setting.
You can't have a good horror if you don't feel properly threatened by your surroundings.
Because after Amnesia's popularity, everyone just wants to copy that, and it's boring as shit.
Sure but then you have to mind the difficulty because having to replay a section too many times will also drain the horror from it.
>extra credits
Today I will remind them
>This kills the xc fan
I agree saving as a resource is cool, but the problem with that is balancing. A lot of horror games have one-hit-kills which would easily get frustrating, meanwhile NOT having them quickly plummets the fear factor when you realize how goofy it looks for an enemy to get to you, swing at you, and then stand there waiting for its cooldown to finish so it can swing again. What needs to happen is enemies need to get better attacks that can still scare the player without being one-hit-kills. I still believe grapples are the best iteration. An enemy catches you, grabs you, and begins to eat/beat the shit out of you and you need to struggle your way out. You're gonna take some damage out of it but you won't die, and when your health is low enough you won't be able to escape.
i liked this game, i think the genre simply needs a huge shakeup, every game is just some fucking walking simulator at this point when there are many elements that can induce fear and tension in the player.
stopped watching after they replaced the narrator. the new guy's tone/attitude doesn't really work for me and the topics they've been covering have been getting less interesting.
Ok so the last good horror game came out 6 years ago? Die
no none of this shit. Why not introduce interesting new mechanics? Ray tracing, shadows, flashlights, etc, for one.
Second, why don't more people consider meaningful camo decisions in video games? Like, if I'm wearing a white t-shirt shouldn't that influence AI detection based on certain enviorments?
Also, hearing, if you can trace light waves, why not sound waves? I know some technology like that exists, but ususally "3d audio" for headphones, I'm talking about, if a door is open, an npc is more likely to hear what is hearing in the room. That makes sense and isn't usualy implemented.

Ultimately, I don't think things like this happen in a bubble. I think if we really want to see games progress we'll have to see humanity in general progress.
>Dead Space
>peak horror
It was a stereotypical action game with enemies from The Thing. The closest thing to something being scary was the necromorph torso that swims at you while outside the haul in the silent vacuum of space. You're so used to these things making noise, reach a silent segment, turn a corner, and it's just swimming through space towards you with zero build up.
If Dead Space is peak horror, throw Lost Planet and Earth Defense Force in there too.
Say what you will about the faggotry surrounding people who obsess over ~lore~ and people who record themselves screaming for an audience.
5 Nights at Freddy's was a fresh horror game, specifically the first one. The later ones felt too repetitive once he found that initial success and didn't know what he wanted to do to iterate on the idea.
>the game came out in 2014
this just makes me feel old
STOP TAKING UP ALL MY INTERNET YOU FUCK. WE'RE RUNNING OUT.
The in game hud was at least neat and original, no previous action game really did anything like it
>or Dead Space?
Why the living FUCK do zoomies lump THAT garbage together with the absolute peak games these days??
ONLY WHEN YOU STOP NOT BUYING MY ENERGY CRYSTALS AND BOOK ABOUT HOW HUMANITY ORIGINATED ON MARS BUT CORPORATIONS LITERALLY SUCKED THE PLANET DRY AND WE HAD TO FLEE TO EARTH TO SURVIVE
>HOW HUMANITY ORIGINATED ON MARS
ACTUALLY YOU PIECE OF SHIT, THE JEWS COME FROM THE FUTURE AND ARE LIVING WITH THE REST OF HUMANITY SO THEY CAN ACHIEVE THE NEXT STEP OF EVOLUTION THAT THEY FAILED TO ACHIEVE LAST TIME. HUMANITY ORIGINATED FROM ATLANTIS, DUH.
>Silent Hill 2
>not SH3
SH2 was not even scary compared to the first or third one. It was pretty tame overall.
>or Dead Space
Dead Space isn't a very effective horror game in the same vein RE4 isn't. It is thrilling, but at its heart its a power trip of an action game with a horror aesthetic and jumpscares.
I have less time for game design, I've been sucked into the gay world of ecommerce specifically dropshipping.
All I see now is sales numbers and traffic. Sucked the joy out of youtube. Extra credits seems like occupational training almost as much as it is a edutainment tool.
uhhh... Like, it's not exactly the type of thing you sit and watch anymore and think "Oh, yeah, that's fun. That's cool. Games!". Maybe this is personal but it feels like an exercise. It used to be a genuine outlet for this awesome guy, james, to talk about shit. Really.
Used to love their history series, but newfaggot always goes on tangents about his cat
Try beating the evil within with only 3 saves on akumu. If you even get touched you die.
Wait WHAT
Did they argue fighting Nazis in WW2 sims wad somehow normalizing them?

I was referencing something Extra Credits genuinely believes, retard.
Maybe I'm special but I think RE2 remake is the scariest game ever made. Silent Hill 2 didn't made me feel dread but gave me a sense of melancholia, while Dead Space was just full of predictable jumpscares. Dead Space is a great tps though.
To be honest I'm affected by any horror that makes me feel the peril of the game. I thought Resident Evil 2 remake was a recent peak. Not sure it's over with yet
And I was referencing Spirit Science, which is basically Extra Credits.
Me too!
It is scary, I hate it when the zombies grab you and you're literally fighting for you life. Terrible game, don't play it.
>James
>an awesome guy
Should I dump the spirit science shit or the anita sarkeesian bootlicking shit
Ask me about anyone and I can tell you they're not perfect. I'm sure your criticism is just as valid as my praise.
Yeah I get really invested in staying alive and it pains me when I get bit because of how visceral it feels to have to experience that. Without the tank controls you'd think traditional RE zombies wouldn't be so intimidating but the formula still works.
You are definitely special. RE2 remake is good, but I've played several games that are much scarier.
Off the top of my head, Shadow Hearts, Silent Hill 1&3 (not SH2), and REmake.
I kinda resent the panic of having to struggle with bad controls as a fear-inducing thing though
No. His criticism is more valid. It's pretty difficult to listen to anyone who spews collectivist identitarian bullshit.
That's fair. But I'm not sure what game you're referencing in terms of "bad controls."
I assume you're vaguely referring to one or more of the games I listed. But I sincerely hope not, because it literally takes like 5 minutes to get used to any of the controls for the games I listed.
It's considered a buzzword at this point, but atmosphere really is the key to good horror. You do not even need active threats if you can get the player into the headspace that they are not alone.
Pic related is an excellent example of this.
