No, but you can only unlock BLU after you beat the 2.0 story, it's more of a side-activity than a real class and good luck trying to learn spells when you can't use Party Finder.

I prefer how WOW does it where if you don't have a paid sub your account is shifted to Free Trial mode with some minor differences (characters Level 20 and under will be able to join a guild if any of their other characters are still in that guild, etc)

You're playing it wrong. You can enjoy all the story, aesthetics and music just resubbing once or twice an expansion, blowing through the new MSQ/trials/raids and then dropping it again when your sub expires. You can play a year or two's worth of content updates for a few bucks.

it's only really like this in ARR and even then they're trimming it down a bit with the new patch
most main quests and notable sidequests nowadays are "go to person (cutscene) go to place kill thing (cutscene) (cutscene) go to person (cutscene) do a dungeon (cutscene)" you spend half your fucking time in PLOT
