My old 'generic usb gamepad' kicked the bucket so I want to know if Zig Forums thinks a steam controller is worth getting.
Is it still possible to reasonably play games that use a 'normal' gamepad with two thumbsticks, on one of them?

Do not buy it expecting good general use controller. It's niche, it's literally designed for games which don't have native controller support.
Gyro is better for aiming than touchpads and sticks are better for non-fps games. So there's no point in getting one. Just get a dualshock4 or use a mouse and keyboard.
Collector's item, don't bother
It's discontinued, isn't it?
Valve does not sell Steam Controllers anymore.I bought one and it was OK. I personally do not like the D-Pad. Otherwise, I think it is a great controller. I recommend a PS4 controller but the largest downsides in my experience are that the button prompts will not match the controller for most games (ABXY instead of Triangle, Circle, etc) and that the touchpad is only used as a really big select button for most games.
>playing FPS with a gamepad on PC
Someone really needs to bring back that double trackball controller idea. Trackballs are much more accurate than sticks
It’s comfy as fuck and I use mine almost daily. For browsing the Internet, putting porn on the TV and for playing Civ/RTC. It’s pretty garbage for the vast majority of games and I don’t recommend it as a main controller. It’s very odd and doesn’t work well for regular games without a ridiculous amount of practice. Even people that are really good with it are still better with a mouse and keyboard. Gyro is really good for aiming rapidly but doesn’t work for everyone. Get an Xbox One or PS4 controller
it's a controller that was attempting to cater to a niche that barely existed, that said the innovative elements are pretty fucking cool and it's good if you're willing to sink time into customization profiles for specific games
>Buy it for $5
>All the games I'd want to use it on, it doesn't work as I would like
>All the games it works flawlessly for are games I'd rather just use a M+K for
But why tho? It's for PC owner without a mouse? Why buy more shit when you already have the better input device for the job?
Gyro aiming has the potential to be more accurate than KB+M when you put in the practice to master it.
I'm glad it was made because it led to Steam's controller support and re-mapping and there are lessons I wish other controllers learned from it, but I rarely ever use it to play games.
The only game I play routinely with it is P4G because I set all of the controls to only require grazing the touchpads and lightly pulling the triggers, which for a game that doesn't require precise timed input is very relaxing.
Got it for $5. Still think I overpaid.
>[is] a steam controller is worth getting
It's not. The proof is in Valve's cessation of its manufacture and selling. Get a Dualshock4 and get DS4Windows for re-mapping to whatever buttons you want.
no, it's not for general purpose use. it's great for niche uses but the second one will be general purpose.
just get an xbone controller or, more to the point, wait like a month and get an xsex controller.
>Gyro aiming has the potential to be more accurate than KB+M when you put in the practice to master it.
No, it really doesn't...Holding something and twisting it around will never be more precise than controlling something with just your wrist, and snapping is just not ever going to be a thing
1. they had a massive sale to clear their stock on steam controllers. You can only get them through third parties now (amazon/ebay) at massively inflated prices. This alone is a reason not to get it.
2. the controller is pretty meh for vidya IMO, but it's absolutely godsend if you want to control your pc from the couch e.g.
I use it for souls games and it works well. better than x360 and ds2 that I used previously. mouse can be a bit jittery sometimes though.

literally not understanding how retail and the selling of products works, lol
You can enable gyro aiming on dualshock? That would be neat.
OK user, if you say so
Tell me when you buy the steam controller from steam or buy it from a scalper at twice or thrice the price.

Have you ever touched Wii?
I tinkered with wiimote on PC and it was incredibly accurate. I played just cause 2 with headshots left and right, and I basically emulated the mouse. Native support for pointers would be godsend.

you can play anything with them and play games better than with any other controllers due to design and the crazy customization options
it used to be a pain in the ass for non-steam games, but they fixed it now
He even says in the video that it is wasted potential mostly for PS4 players not to include it in their games.
He didn't say it probably doesn't feel good. He was calling out this stupid sentiment:
>Gyro aiming has the potential to be more accurate than KB+M when you put in the practice to master it.
