The 6th generation of consoles. What a great time to be alive...

The 6th generation of consoles. What a great time to be alive, the future looked so bright and the brilliant past was still fresh in our minds. You had three excellent platforms and the Gamecube, odds are you were playing some gold. What are your favorite memories and games from the time?

You meant four good platforms.
Every console had something going for it back then.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Playing the Tanker demo in a Sam Goody located in the basement of a mall. A few years later Sam Goody would file for bankruptcy. They had already been bought by Best Buy, and the place was sprawling but sad and empty, sort of like Best Buy today. I had no idea Metal Gear Solid 2 was coming out soon, but here was this random kiosk with nobody using it. I played for a long time, waiting for my parents to finish shopping elsewhere. I was impressed with the graphics and how logical the world was: shoot a magazine and it exploded in a puff of pages, hold up enemies with a gun like a mugger, stuff them in a locker to hide the bodies. That demo convinced me to get the game for Christmas.

just not the cube which had some really weak first party games and basically no third party games.

there were literally only TWO good gamecube games, Metroid Prime and killer7

I went full PC after the Greatest Generation and I will never go back, I can't

9/11 was a time displacement attack on our universe. Life was just about to be too good for everyone.

nigga the dreamcast is up there

you can say gamecube was in third place but it didn't kill all of nintendo's consoles for the rest of recorded history

It's easy to go back once you realize how lacking PC is and how emulation is inferior.

Dreamcast was on the market a third of the time the Gamecube was yet has almost as many games despite even less third party support. Not to mention the impact and influence of the dreamcast is still felt to this day. The DC was on track to be a huge market success but Sega literally ran out of money and had to pull out.

The Gamecube was a lunchbox for kids.

Resident Evil 4, F-Zero GX

>Not to mention the impact and influence of the dreamcast is still felt to this day
which is why sega is such a big name in the industry these days right

Yes.

This gen more than any other, it felt great to be an idort.

Killer apps on every platform and PC.

Almost every "exclusive" of 8th gen was multiplat or has become multiplat during 9th gen.

this was definitely made by someone who was not playing pc games during the 7th gen. being a pc gamer during the 7th gen sucked unless you were playing older games.

Killer7 was also on PS2

I was a little disappointed with the PS2, memory cards were expensive and you couldn't use PS1 pads and multi-tap. Playstation mag with demo disc was also dying. Didn't feel like a worthy successor of the PS1 at that time, but enjoyed it more and more as time passed with a lot of good and great games releases.
Got the cube on christmas with Rogue Leader, felt like turbo next gen, I was the happiest kid ever.
Got an Xbox for Halo 2 launch, I thought this was the best game I ever played.
Never got a dreamcast sadly.

Great gen with godly games, many of my all time favorites came with it. Best gen in fact imo

But at the time! I could play Shen Mue, FFX, Wind Waker, Halo and Warcraft 3!

This gen to the next was one of the last gens with ana actual noticeable leap in graphics and how games had changed. Now it’s just smoothing and copy/paste

>you couldn't use PS1 pads
Yes you could. Vice versa too.

>8th gen
Wii U
>9th system plays games worse than a 2013 8th gen xbox one
Yeah ok nintranny

Yeah and RE4 was on the Zeebo but do you really?

Cube versions are usually inferior with a few exceptions, even the ones that are "better" often have more features and content on other platforms.

Cube's basically worthless. Actually what really makes it worthless is Nintendont on the Wii, which runs gamecube games at anywhere from 20-35 more frames per second, eliminating frame drops.

>you couldn't use PS1 pads
Something tells me you never tried.

I'm an idort but the Switch = 9th gen thing is pure cope. It's still 8th gen, the Wii U was simply such a flop that they had to restart halfway through.

In the case of Killer7 and RE4, the PS2 versions are FAR worse. RE4 doesn't even have real-time cutscenes on PS2, it uses FMVs of the Gamecube version.

That's nice, I also have the wii version, the 360 version, the ps4 version, my goodness it seems even the PS2 version has more content. "b-b-but resident evil 4!" is the ultimate cubecope.

I played through WW, TP, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Eternal Darkness, Twin Snakes, Resi 0, 4 and REmake at the time.

I still hang on to it for the GBA player.

It definitely has the Wii U/Switch catalogue problem though. Nintendo were right to merge their home and handheld lines with the Switch, otherwise their home console would be selling like a lemon again.

When Xbox was announced, my first reaction was immediate dismissal. I thought it was dumb. It's a massive brick with a garbage controller and no games on it, and that's what they intend to compete with established giants? To this day I still don't see a single exclusive worth getting an Xbox for in any generation.
I've never seen a Dreamcast IRL nor met anyone who owned one.
I'm sure PS2 would have been a fine choice, and I did own a PS1 previously. But by the 6th gen, I had discovered that Nintendo had the exclusives I liked the most and thus went for the GameCube. I suppose I dodged a bullet as PS3 went to complete shit.
I still buy Nintendo but my primary platform is PC in the end.

Nincels genuinely have the worst opinions on games, absolute trash taste.

Yeah you sound a bit trapped by your brand loyalty. Stop thinking about publisher/platform holder and look at games instead. I don't know what your taste is, but regardless I'm absolutely confident in saying you're outright dismissing vast swathes of fantastic games and depriving yourself of better experiences because of some weird Nintendo loyalty.

No shit a version on a newer console is going to be better. We're talking about the 6th gen consoles here. I don't even like Nintendo, by the way. I was always a full-on Sega fan. But if you really think that the Gamecube versions of multiplats are worse than the PS2 versions, you probably haven't played that many.

>I was always a full-on Sega fan
Same here, why would you settle with the worst platform for Sega fans then? Seems like a convenient out you'd hope nobody would question you on.
>you probably haven't played that many.
I have, it's actually why I spent so much time with the original Xbox. Turns out most 6th gen multiplats were significantly improved. GC often toned down visual effects/shader style effects which it literally just couldn't do, so PS2 versions often have a leg up - especially when storage is the question. Xbox is often the best with some exceptions like GTA SA.

Cube is basically worthless, especially with the Wii existing.

I have GC, PS2, Wii, PC, PS3 and PS4 versions.

is right, the PS2 version was not a clean port and was inferior to the GC version. Compare the fog/draw distance quality and frame rate (we're talking about native hardware here, not emulating).

That's nice and everything, but RE4 really isn't that important. I don't care if it runs better on gamecube when every subsequent version runs better than the gamecube version and has more features from the PS2 version. Is it literally all you can say?

You seem confused. Thread is talking about *at the time of the 6th gen*. You seem to be thinking it is about *subsequent gens and/or current date*?

gen 6 was the best time in gaming history. no sjw bullshit, no early access, no "muh graphics". only soul
