You know how a lot of people complain about stories being pretentious? DBZ is the complete polar opposite of pretentious. Everything you see is exactly what you get. You're here for cool fight scenes broken up by goofy character moments and the show never pretends you're here for anything else. Anything that can be called "plot" is just there to give characters excuses to get into more fights.

The same arrogance creates Perfect Cell yet he still faces him when he has no chance of winning and nothing to gain from it except for preserving the earth
