Now that the dust has long settled, did this game succeed?
I don't just mean commercially. I mean did it manage to make VR seem like a legitimate gaming platform, and not just a meme for royalties

It's kind of inbetween. VR is still too expensive for most people.
Yes. VR has retained all the players it gained because of Alyx and it greatly expanded the ecosystem. You still can't get your hands on a Mixed Reality/Oculus/Index headset
I'm not revisiting it so it's shit. No replay value. Playing it again is just tedious
VR isn't for most people. It's supplemental to gaming meaning it will never replace it for people too poor to afford games let alone hardware.
It really REALLY needs a fucking SMOD.
Pretty sure we wouldn't be getting Hitman VR without it.
And platform success is never going to balance on a single title, single titles can help tremendously but you always need a healthy turnover of titles to get there.
>Pretty sure we wouldn't be getting Hitman VR without it.
If it's gonna be PSVR exclusive Alyx ain't got shit to do with it.
>expanded the ecosystem
The only people who regularly use VR are trannies on vrchat, because they crave the escapism.
Oh it'll launch as a PSVR exclusive due to developer dealings for sure.
I guarantee you it won't stay that way.
Heard that one about RE7 and Ace Combat 7 already.
Nice meme, retard
thanks
For VR to REALLY go mainstream, Sony needs to Bundle a PSVR with the PS5. And have every first party game have a VR mode.
cope harder poorfag
IO Interactive aren't retarded anti-consumer chinks
everyone is when pappa sony fills their pockets.
>did it manage to make VR seem like a legitimate gaming platform
It did for me. The bigger problem I had was whether or not VR, despite its legitimacy, was more fun for me than regular gaming. Don't get me wrong, HL:A was really impressive and felt amazing to play. I thought about it nonstop, and after I beat it I couldn't stop thinking about it. But I also didn't want to play it any more for the following reasons:
>Getting my office 'VR ready' is a pain in the ass.
I kept my Rift S in the box so that my cats wouldn't destroy the cable. Getting it set up meant fucking with the USB 3.0 and DP cables to get it to properly sync 50% of the time (common Rift S problem.) Also had to move shit around my room to make more space.
>VR kind of drains you
Physically it's not too bad if you're not a fatty, but a game requiring full-body interaction isn't always what I want to do to enjoy myself. I had to be 'in the mood' to play VR games-- not just HL, but Beatsaber and the other big ones.
>Technology is good enough but not great
Current headsets make you choose between
-Wireless (Quest, modded Vive)
-Physical IPD slider (Quest, Index)
-High refresh rates (Index, Vive)
-High Resolution screens (Rift S, Index)
-Decent FoV (Index)
-Easy setup (Quest, Rift S)
-Great Tracking (Vive, index)
-Bulk (all)
My IPD fell outside of the ideal range for the Rift S (71mm,) which made really close-up objects in VR not work. The screens were finally good enough to have everything feel clear, but still lacking for virtual desktop. Hated being tethered through the cable as well, especially in games like Alyx where you're expected to be constantly crouching down to look under shit (ALWAYS felt the cable draping over my shoulders, got old after 15 hours).
After I beat HL:A I saw that used Rift S headsets were going for $550+ (Bought mine new for $350). Happily sold it for a profit but will buy a new one once the resolution + FoV get serious boosts and wireless is standard.
based
>poorfag
It's so tiresome.
You forgot to mention the absolutely abysmal contrast ratio and blacks in the LCD variants. This and the cable are huge flaws for the Index.
cope
I have VR and both sides are retarded.
stop false flagging we both know you're a VRlet
fuck off imbecile.

>imagine missing out on the best Half-Life game ever made
now you're the one coping
>you will never place melons into a spindryer at an abandoned laundromat in VR and watch it go round and round
I can't imagine this not being the case for me, I'd probably kill myself :^)
I think it's getting there slowly but surely. The game plays pretty nice but it does feel pretty arcade-y. I think headsets and controllers need a few more iterations so that all of the manufacturers are on the same page in regards to features like the grip, wireless, and specs.
>wanting standardized hardware
>wanting innovation to stagnate so everyone can have the same generic HMD
Why don't you fuck off and just get a console too while you're at it?
There's nothing wrong with having nice things standard user.
Look at the shit you're using to play games right now.
I loved the game, it's my GOTY but someone would be retarded to think it's a game for everyone and people disliking it can only mean they don't have VR. It had the typical Half-Life level design and charm but it wasn't as fast paced and I don't think as replay-able as previous entries. I think the VR equipment can heavily influence enjoy-ability as well. I wouldn't have liked it nearly as much on anything but the Index controllers.
>the best Half-Life game ever made
>popular games are:
>Second Life, but in VR
>DDR, but in VR
>"haha look at this quirky gimmick", but in VR
Pretty embarrassing showing.
>reee I need my tranny individualism, standards are practically fascism
dilate
that's when you drop the conversation because you know someone's a total VRcultist or shitposting.
It's a great game, and although much more conservative than most others, it's also the most polished experience.
You mean the desktop I built myself and installed Linux on? Yeah I'm glad I'm not retarded enough to advocate for standardization.
cope
It's difficult.
People want BIG AAA VR EXPERIENCES.
But, the market isn't there for most publishers to spend the money. But how to grow the market without things to lure people?
Yes, to retards. Fortunately they are paying the way to better equipment.
The only thing Alyx succeeded in is showing people how much VR can make a game worse.
It slows movement to a crawl. Way too much ammo everywhere because no melee to fall back on. The 3d """puzzles""" and cupboard/locker looting are just the most annoying mechanics ever added to a first person shooter.
Would have been a better game without VR
not who you're responding to but arguing otherwise is the ultimate cope and I love Half-Life 1 more than anything but Alyx is even better.
You don't need fucking AAA budget blown on shit like voice acting and pretty graphics.
steamcharts.com
Just fucking make multiplayer games with user created content.
>uses L*nux
>calls other people retarded
The games just need to strike a balance. I never got tired with looting in Arizona Sunshine since there were many guns and types of ammo in that game
It's a great game, but the tech that makes it good is still crazy expensive for the everyman and there hasn't been any good software following up on it.
The next big thing coming for VR is the star wars flight sim EA's putting out but I don't think that's going to have controller functionality, just the headset.
I think so. It's the perfect starter VR game. If it launched with the gen 1 headsets, VR probably would've had a dramatically better trajectory. But I think the prospects of VR are now much better than they've ever been.
Legitimately what is there to criticize about it? The extent of Zig Forums criticism boils down to nitpicking the writing or crying over the ending.
>he uses Windows
retard
Anyone complaining about the ending is retarded, the events of HLA is totally a G-Man move. Letting himself get caught, letting Alyx watch her father die in the main timeline so alternate timeline Alyx can watch the events of EP2 take place
It is both likely that GMan would do this and possible for GMan to do this knowing what we know about him.
For one the mechanics feel very dated if it's not your first VR game.
Little variety in locations, weapons and enemies. Game suffers from worst parts of HL2 with none of the good ones.
Music is ass, Alyx and Russell never shut up and their dialogue is your typical reddit humour.
Zero replayability.
Everything in your computer follows a standard. Your keyboard, mouse, and controllers also follow standards.
It sold out VR headsets in every distributor for months, so yes. Half Life Alyx and VRchat have both helped popularize virtual reality, and we're seeing more developers experiment with it. Hitman 3 is getting a VR mode that will allow you to play every level in the "tm" series (from HM2016 - HM2020) in VR. I'm sure Bethesda's new RPG will have some VR potential since they ported FO4 & Skyrim to VR, and it'll only keep going. I don't reckon we'll see another big triple A "VR ONLY" game for a while, but Valve has been rumored to be doing a Barney spinoff that will be VR only, kind of like Alyx. It was clearly meant to be more of a "setting the new standpoint" game, rather than one to make cash. They wouldn't have given it out to free to everyone with an Index if they wanted max cash.
>Game suffers from worst parts of HL2 with none of the good ones.
Game explores more into the combine and Xen and has none of the airboat/jeep bullshit that HL2 did so I think it's pretty much the exact opposite. Only thing it's missing was a nova prospekt chapter although the vault was almost that.
